The first one I had bought during the summer of 2023 died probably due to unfavorable conditions (transport during a heatwave and then potted in a rather sun-exposed area). Since then, Promesse de Fleurs has removed the "sun" exposure from its description, a good move. The second specimen purchased in December 2023 is doing quite well even though it's not very vigorous. At this stage, it hasn't produced any culms yet (September 2024). To be planted in the shade and in a location not too hot in the south.

Description

Fargesia papyrifera 'Blue Dragon®' is a variety of medium-sized, non-running bamboo with steel blue colouration of its young stubble that is truly spectacular.

Originating from China, specifically the Yunnan region, and belonging to the Poaceae family, Fargesia papyrifera has an upright habit. It bears stubble that is covered, in its juvenile stage, with a bloom that gives it a bluish appearance. Its foliage is composed of medium-sized leaves, with a beautiful matte green colour. Its growth is relatively fast, reaching a height of 4 m to 6 m (13 ft to 19.7 ft) in a few years. Hardy, but slightly less so than other Fargesias, it can withstand temperatures down to -15° C (5° F). However, in case of snowfall, make sure to shake off the stubble to prevent damage. It is classified as cespitose, meaning it does not spread. The installation of a rhizome barrier is therefore optional.

Bamboos are not demanding plants and thrive in any garden soil. However, their growth rate and maximum height will be influenced by the quality and moisture level of the soil. Ideally, plant them in acidic or neutral, light, moist, and well-drained soil. In terms of exposure, we recommend planting your Fargesia papyrifera in partial shade, sheltered from cold and drying winds.

A star in Asian-inspired gardens, bamboo suits many styles, from modern to traditional. When planted in mass, it quickly creates enchanting small forests, and its striking appearance adds beautiful vertical elements to modern gardens and terraces. Its rapid growth also makes it an excellent plant for managing privacy in crowded spaces.

This bamboo can be planted as a standalone specimen. In borders, it pairs well with many plants. In lush and exotic gardens, we recommend associating it with Hostas with bluish foliage, such as Hosta Halcyon, and Actaea with large pedicels.

Did you know? The flowering of bamboos is a true mystery: irregular and unpredictable, it occurs only rarely. It provides little botanical interest and, above all, it is a bad omen as it signals its death. But don't worry, this is a rare phenomenon, and some particularly resilient species manage to regenerate over time.

Planting and care

Grown in containers, bamboo can be planted at any time of the year, except during freezing temperatures. However, the best planting period is in late summer and autumn, when the soil is warm and rainfall is more frequent. The planting distance depends on how you plan to use your bamboo: for a mass planting, leave a gap of 1.8 m to 2 m between each plant. For a hedge, reduce this distance to 1m to 1.4 m.

In general, bamboo prefers rich, well-drained soil that remains moist, either acidic or neutral. It can tolerate slightly alkaline soil.

During planting, make sure to loosen the soil and moisten the root ball by soaking it. You can also add well-decomposed compost and rake it into the surface. Watering should be done regularly, especially during the first year in the ground and continuously if your bamboo is grown in a pot. The establishment period may seem a bit long at times, but don't panic!

This bamboo does not spread, so the installation of a rhizome barrier (thick and resistant polypropylene film) is optional.

As for maintenance, bamboo is not demanding: remember to weed around their base at least initially, until the dead leaves on the ground form a natural mulch. An application of nitrogen fertiliser (well-decomposed manure or liquid fertiliser) in spring and autumn can be beneficial.
