Description
Washingtonia robusta, also known as the Mexican Fan Palm or Petticoat Palm, is a slender and majestic palm, characterised by its rapid growth and slender habit. Its thin, tall trunk is topped with a dense crown of large, fan-shaped palmate leaves, almost round in outline. One of its distinctive features is its natural "petticoat", formed by the old, dry, trailing leaves that wrap around the upper part of the trunk. Not very hardy (down to -8°C), it is suited to mild climates, where it withstands summer drought and sea spray well. Sowing is a simple and effective method to grow it at low cost, in warm, humid conditions and with a little patience.
Washingtonia robusta belongs to the Arecaceae family, just like its close relative Washingtonia filifera, to which it is often compared. However, it is distinguished by a thinner, taller trunk and even faster growth. Native to the desert regions of Sonora and Baja California in Mexico, it grows naturally in arid areas, where it draws water from deep within canyons and oases. This palm can reach up to 25 metres in height, with a thin trunk about 80cm in diameter, slightly swollen at the base. Its foliage, arranged in a terminal crown, does not exceed 3 metres across, giving it a graceful, slender silhouette. The long petioles (1.50m) are reddish at the base, armed with sharp, orange-brown teeth. Each petiole bears a circular leaf, 80cm in diameter, of intense glossy green, divided into fine, flexible segments. On mature specimens, a pale patch visible beneath the foliage marks the junction between the petioles and the segments. Its "petticoat" of dead leaves, characteristic of Washingtonia, persists for a long time and forms a natural protection against the elements. The spectacular summer flowering occurs only on specimens grown outdoors and several years old. It appears as long, arching inflorescences that can reach 4 metres, extending well beyond the crown. The numerous cream to flesh-coloured flowers give way to small, shiny black fruits, each containing a single smooth, dark seed, capable of germinating quickly.
Washingtonia robusta is a highly prized ornamental palm for mild climates, particularly by the seaside, where it tolerates sea spray and drought. Along with Washingtonia filifera and Phoenix canariensis, it is among the most widely cultivated palms, from tropical regions to temperate zones. In cooler climates, it can be grown in a large container to be overwintered in a bright, cool, and airy location indoors. Its slender, majestic silhouette makes it an ideal choice as a specimen plant, particularly near an entrance, gateway, or swimming pool, where it brings an exotic ambience. It integrates perfectly into Mediterranean gardens, accompanied by Eucalyptus, large Mimosa, or other plants suited to coastal climates. It thrives in well-drained soil, in a sunny position, and requires regular watering in summer to optimise its rapid growth.

Planting and care
Sowing Washingtonia robusta requires a few essential steps to ensure good germination. Before sowing, it is recommended to soak the seeds in warm water for 24 to 48 hours, which helps to soften the shell and speed up germination.
The substrate should be well-drained, formed of light potting compost mixed with sand or perlite. Washingtonia robusta prefers a slightly lime-bearing soil, well-aerated and without excess moisture. The seeds should be sown at a depth of 1 to 2 cm, with sufficient spacing for good root development. The pots should be placed in a warm, bright location, maintaining a constant temperature between 25 and 30°C, with controlled humidity.
Germination can take between two and four weeks depending on conditions. Once the seedlings develop their first leaves, they should be transplanted individually into larger pots containing a similar substrate. Before final planting in open ground, it is essential to harden them off gradually to outdoor conditions to ensure good adaptation.
It is recommended to keep the young plants in a nursery for at least two years before transplanting them into open ground. This period allows the palms to develop a robust root system, essential for their survival and future growth.
During these two years, the young palms should be grown in individual pots, placed in a bright environment and protected from extreme climatic conditions. This nursery phase ensures gradual hardening and better adaptation at the time of final transplanting.
After planting in open ground, water generously to help root establishment. During the first three years, water regularly in spring and summer. In winter, once the palm is well established, watering can be reduced.
In spring, apply crushed horn to the base of the palm to encourage its growth. For potted specimens, feed from April to September with a liquid fertiliser for green plants.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
