Description
Berberis × stenophylla ‘Corallina Compacta’ is a miniature, evergreen barberry with very slow growth for rockeries, borders and container growing. In spring, its coral-red buds open into small orange to orange-yellow flowers, clearly visible against its dark green foliage. Its compact habit, irregular branching and very narrow leaves give it a distinctive character. This thorny shrub remains decorative all year round and requires little care.
This barberry belongs to the Berberidaceae family. Berberis × stenophylla is a horticultural hybrid obtained from Berberis darwinii and B. empetrifolia, two shrubs native to Chile and Argentina. The former is a large barberry from the southern temperate regions; the latter develops low-growing vegetation on rocky slopes, scree and windswept ground in Patagonia. Their hybrid was first cultivated before 1864. The epithet stenophylla means 'narrow-leaved' and describes one of its most recognisable characteristics. The variety ‘Corallina Compacta’ is much smaller than the type hybrid and has received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. It is an evergreen shrub with very slow growth, forming a dense, rounded but irregular bush. Its short, horizontal or slightly arching branches are armed with sharp thorns. Most specimens reach 30 to 50cm in height with a comparable spread after many years. Very old specimens can approach 70 to 80cm in height and 60cm across. The 8 to 15mm long leaves are leathery and glossy with a pointed tip. They are dark green on the upper surface, more glaucous beneath; young shoots may be tinged with bronze or red. Flowering occurs in April and May, sometimes from late March in mild climates. Coral-red buds appear in small pendulous clusters. As they open, they turn orange then open into orange-yellow flowers 1m in diameter. All these colours are present on the same branch. The flowers are visited by pollinating insects. They may be followed in autumn by small spherical blue-black berries covered with a pale bloom. The foliage may take on bronze tints in cold weather. This barberry tolerates all pH levels, including chalky soils, as well as wind, sea spray and moderate drought once established. Its hardiness is around -15 °C, or even lower in well-drained soil and a sheltered position.
In a large rockery, a small collection of dwarf barberries can be planted pairing ‘Corallina Compacta’ with Berberis buxifolia ‘Nana’, evergreen and green, and Berberis thunbergii ‘Bagatelle’, with deciduous purple foliage. Their dimensions are comparable and their habits differ sufficiently to avoid a uniform planting. Rockery conifers are also good companions. In front of these shrubs, one can plant Iberis sempervirens ‘Snowflake’, with white flowers, and blue-violet aubrieta ‘Hamburger Stadtpark’. These plants also enjoy sun and well-drained soil. This Berberis can also be grown in a container.

Planting and care
Plant this Berberis Corallina Compacta in spring or early autumn, in full sun or partial shade. Full sun encourages more abundant flowering. It tolerates ordinary, poor or chalky soil, provided it drains quickly. In heavy clay soil, plant it on a mound or in a raised rock garden, mixing fine gravel into the planting soil. Water regularly for the first two years, then only during prolonged droughts. When growing in a pot, use a container with drainage holes and a substrate mixed with draining materials; however, the root ball must not be allowed to dry out completely. Feeding is unnecessary and may produce less compact shoots.
Pruning is not required. If a few branches unbalance the shrub, shorten them just after flowering, as the buds form on the previous year's wood. Wear thick gloves to avoid the thorns. Keep the plant away from narrow pathways and areas frequented by young children.
