Description

Berberis thunbergii Fireball is a thorny, compact bush with an upright habit, offering bright red-orange, oval leaves throughout the season.

Originating from Japan, the Fireball Barberry forms a compact, upright bush that reaches 1.5m (4.92 ft) in height. It is deciduous and thorny, with red branches. This variety is characterized by round leaves that are 3cm (1.2in) long and red-orange. Its insignificant yellow spring flowering is followed by the production of small bright red berries.

The Fireball Barberry, hardy down to -15°C (5°F), grows well in any moist, well-drained soil, even if it is chalky, poor, or rocky, in a sunny location. Reserve partial shade for the South. It requires little maintenance, just make sure to keep the soil moist in summer. Trim hedges with shears in spring and autumn.

The Fireball Barberry is often used as a low hedge. Pair it with species with golden foliage to create a beautiful range of colours. It also makes a lovely composition with pieris, herbaceous peonies, and grasses.

Planting and care

The Berberis thunbergii Fireball is hardy down to -15°C (5 °F) and should be planted in spring or autumn, in any fresh, well-drained soil, even limestone, poor or stony and a sunny position or partial shade in the South. Water generously and frequently during the first summers. No need for feeding. It requires little maintenance, just make sure to keep the soil moist, especially in summer. When planting Berberis as a hedge, balance the silhouette in spring and September. In loose hedges, trim the branches after flowering to give the bush a rounded, balanced shape. Be careful not to touch the branches with bare hands as they have thorns that are difficult to remove once embedded in the skin.
