Description

Buddleia davidii 'Black Knight' is a bush with dark purple, honey-scented flowers in long spikes and silver-green leaves.

This hardy bush has a significant advantage: its melliferous flowering! It is not for nothing that it is called the Butterfly Bush. With an elegant habit, Buddleia davidii 'Black Knight' develops deciduous, opposite, elongated leaves, 30cm (11.8 in) long, green on the upper surface and white on the lower surface, on arching branches. From August to September, it bears compact, upright, fragrant flowers in dark purple, 30cm (11.8 in) long, whose pleasant scent attracts many butterflies.

Buddleia davidii 'Black Knight' prefers well-drained soil and a sunny, sheltered location. Deadhead the flowers as they fade to limit its spread and prune severely from March to April.

Buddleia davidii 'Black Knight' can be used as a standalone plant or in a mass planting of bushes, such as white or yellow potentillas.

Care

Pruning instructions The bush only requires a single pruning after flowering. However, every 2 to 3 years, it is good to cut back the branches to maintain a compact habit and prevent the bush from "opening up". In late winter, around March or April, remove half or even two-thirds of the branches and cut off all dead wood. Buddleias flower on new growth, so you won't risk removing the upcoming flowers.
