Description
Buddleia davidii Butterfly Tower ('Tobud1305') brings something new to the world of butterfly bushes with its narrow, tightly columnar habit. This elegant shrub, adorned with slender lanceolate leaves, transforms into a flowering tower for butterflies in summer, animated by panicles of beautiful reddish-purple flowers and multicoloured wings. Cultivating this shrub poses no difficulty in ordinary soil, even poor and occasionally dry soil, and its reduced width development is suitable for gardens of all sizes. Majestic buddleias often take centre stage in large shrub borders and flowering hedges, and rightly so.
Buddleia davidii Butterfly Tower is a deciduous shrub, which often loses its leaves in winter. It belongs to the Scrophulariaceae (buddlejaceae) family. This amazing British cultivar, recently obtained by Thompson & Morgan, is derived, among others, from Buddleia davidii, also known as Father David's Buddleia or Changing Buddleia. The latter is a robust Chinese species that has become invasive under our climates. Butterfly Tower is a sterile hybrid, which does not self-seed in the garden or in nature.
The shrub has a narrow, dense habit, supported by short and barely arched branches. It will reach an average height of 2 m (7 ft) with a spread of 1 m (3 ft) in 7 or 8 years, depending on growing conditions. It flowers from July to early September, producing an abundance of panicles of flowers measuring 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 in) long. The flowers are reddish-purple in colour. They release a sweet scent that is highly attractive to pollinating insects. Its ornamental foliage is composed of slender, rather small leaves with a deep green colour, and the undersides are covered in a greyish fuzz. This very hardy shrub is resistant to urban pollution and does not suffer from occasional dryness in deep soil.
Whether planted individually or in groups, in a hedge, at the corner of a terrace, or at the back of a perennial border, Buddleia davidii Butterfly Tower will enhance the garden in a unique way. Its richly coloured inflorescences, animated by a constant flight of multicoloured butterflies, are a spectacle in themselves. They also complement the blue flowers of Ceanothus 'Gloire de Versailles', for example, or the mauve and white panicles of some summer lilacs. You can also plant it in a mixed hedge, with botanical roses, serviceberries, hawthorns, Japanese quinces, abelias, and forsythias to extend the flowering season. It adapts well to coastal areas and can be grown in containers on a terrace. Its fragrant flowers are also very attractive in bouquets. You can pair this buddleia with tall grasses (Miscanthus, Panicum, Deschampsia) for an elegant contrast.

Planting and care
Buddleia davidii Butterfly Tower is easy to grow, as it is a low-maintenance plant. It thrives in sunny locations, but also flowers in partial shade. Plant it in spring or early autumn, in ordinary, well-worked and well-drained soil. It can tolerate limestone and poor soil. Once established, the plant will tolerate periods of moderate drought. It has no significant enemies. However, beware of caterpillars, weevils, and red spider mites that can infest it. Pruning vigorously after flowering and/or in early spring maintains a compact and branching habit and encourages abundant flowering.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
