Description

Compact and vigorous, Camellia Royal Velvet is a variety with large single flowers, carmine red.

This variety blooms from February to April and forms a 1.20m (4 ft) tall and 70cm (28 in) wide spreading bush. It produces large single flowers with an 8cm (3 in) diameter, composed of carmine red petals adorned in the centre with a bouquet of golden stamens.

The round dark green leaves of this camellia measure 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) in length and are evergreen. Hardy down to -14C°, this variety should be cultivated in partial shade, protected from cold winds. It prefers acidic, humus-rich, moist, and light soil.

Plant Camellia Royal Velvet in a bed of ericaceous soil together with azaleas, skimmia, Japanese quince, and heathers.

Its compact size also allows for pot cultivation. Place it on a semi-shaded terrace, along a wall, protected from cold and drying winds.

Planting and care

The Royal Velvet Camellia prefers a partially shaded spot, sheltered from cold and drying winds. You can also grow it in full sun, but the roots need to stay moist. Plant in a moist, humus-bearing, acidic and well-drained soil. Do not plant the bush too deeply; the top of the root ball should be covered with 3 cm (1.2 in) of soil. In winter, cover with a 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 in) thick mulch composed of leaf compost and crushed bark. Beware of late frosts that can damage the flowers and buds. During dry periods, water the bush to prevent the flower buds from dropping.
