Description

The Deutzia collection for flowering shrub beds brings together three magnificent varieties, each with its own characteristics to enhance the garden with spectacular blooms from spring to late summer. These deutzias, with their flowers ranging from deep pink to pure white, are perfect for creating a large romantic shrub bed. Their deciduous foliage varies from bright green to reddish in autumn, offering prolonged aesthetic interest. These bushes withstand our winters well, and even moderate summer drought once established. They adapt to various types of soil, whether limestone or acidic, and require little maintenance.

The collection consists of:

x 1 Deutzia 'Tourbillon Rouge': characterised by its double deep pink flowers, this deutzia offers abundant flowering from May to June. Its tender green foliage turns reddish in autumn, adding a touch of lasting colour to the garden. Reaching approximately 1.75m in height and 1.25m in spread, it is the largest in the collection. Therefore, it should be placed at the back of the bed.

x 1 Deutzia 'Yuki Cherry Blossom': this variety stands out for its small size (50cm in all directions) and its bell-shaped flowers in a soft pink, which conceal the dark green foliage in spring. It is compact, ideal for small spaces and bordering the bed.

x 1 Deutzia setchuenensis 'Corymbiflora': offering clusters of fragrant white flowers for several months, from June to October, this variety also stands out for its good drought tolerance. Reaching 90cm in height and 80cm in width, this medium-sized shrub is placed between the other two.

For a successful flower bed, plant these deutzias in spring or autumn, in any well-drained soil, in a sunny or semi-shaded position. The 'Tourbillon Rouge' and 'Yuki Cherry Blossom' deutzias, with their very different stature, are planted on either side of the Deutzia 'Corymbiflora'. For a dense visual effect, allow for a spacing of approximately 60 to 80cm between each plant, which corresponds to 2-3 plants per m².

To accompany these deutzias, consider plants with complementary needs and colours. Viburnum plicatum 'Mariesii' with white flowers will form a beautiful backdrop, while hostas will spread their lush foliage along the edge of the bed. Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow', with its variegated leaves and blue flowers, will also fit perfectly in the foreground, creating a colourful carpet throughout the season.

Planting and care

Deutzia requires little maintenance. It is happy with ordinary, but deep, well-drained soil, even limestone and occasionally dry in summer. It will, however, be more floriferous in humus-bearing, fertile and not too dry soil, planted in a sunny spot. It hates very clayey and waterlogged soils in winter. Its hardiness is excellent (-20°C). Pruning is strongly recommended after flowering to maintain a compact habit and promote the production of floriferous shoots.
