Description

The Deutzia gracilis Nikko is a small deciduous flowering bush with a compact habit due to its branched growth. It is one of the best Deutzia cultivars. In May-June, it produces erect clusters of multiple bell-shaped, fragrant, white flowers which measure up to 15cm (5.9in) long.

The vegetation of Deutzia gracilis is abundant. Its foliage is silver-green during flowering and turns wine-red in autumn, which gives the bush a very decorative effect. The leaves have a short petiole and crenate edges and measure 6cm (2.4in) long.

The Deutzia belongs to the Hydrangea family (formerly Saxifragaceae), recognizable by its upright stems, opposite leaves with stiff hairs, and corymbs or panicles of flowers.

A bit out of fashion, survivors from old gardens, deutzias and especially the gracilis are among those almost indestructible bushes that require little effort but provide a lot of satisfaction to the gardener. The Deutzia gracilis 'Nikko' is a horticultural selection with a more compact habit than the species, slow-growing, with remarkable foliage in autumn. Derived from the Asian species gracilis, it remains very hardy and likes moist and deep soils exposed to partial shade or full sun. It adapts well to dry gardens with good mulching. Its flowering is not damaged by rain. It can reach a height of 1m (3ft 4in) at maturity.

With its abundant flowering, it can be used as a standalone in a large pot and in borders, in a sunny rockery, alongside perennial plants, or as a hedge. It is an excellent ground cover plant. Combine it with 'Anthony Waterer' spireas and dwarf weigelas like 'Polka', with ground cover roses or with perennials like 'Orion' Geranium.

Planting and care

The Deutzia gracilis Nikko prefers a sunny location, but you can also grow it in partial shade. Plant it in well-drained ordinary soil, even if it's limestone. Water regularly and moderately. After flowering in spring, remove half of the oldest branches, and prune the bush to encourage the growth of young branches. Easy to grow, this bush is disease-resistant and requires little maintenance.

Care

Pruning instructions Every year or at least every 2 to 3 years, it is advisable to prune in order to remove the older branches that no longer flower. To do this: Just after flowering, cut back the faded stems to their base or even lower, leaving 1 or 2 buds (where the leaves are located). The shrub flowers on one-year-old wood. Remove dead branches to clean the inside of the bush. Replace one-third of the stems over 3 years old by cutting them at the level of the stump with a pruning saw or loppers. This work can be done in winter. Continue removing this old wood over the next 2 years.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year

Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
