Description

The Deutzia × hybrida 'Perle Rose' is an old hybrid variety of deutzia that is still popular, thanks to its prolonged and gentle pink flowering in spring. It is a deciduous bush that is spectacular when in bloom. Its round and upright habit, resistance to diseases and pests, as well as its ease of cultivation even in poor and dry soil, make it indispensable in the garden, especially in a flowering hedge.

The hybrid Deutzia 'Pink Pearl' was obtained by Lorraine nurseryman Victor Lemoine in 1936, through the cross-breeding of Deutzia discolour and Deutzia longifolia. These two species, belonging to the saxifragaceae family, are native to China. 'Perle Rose' is a rather round bush, taking on a more upright habit if left unpruned. It can reach a maximum height of 2m, with a rather fast growth. The abundant flowering takes place for a good part of the month of June, causing the foliage to disappear. Its star-shaped flowers, grouped in panicles, are remarkable: pink to mauve in colour, with white edges, and often fragrant. They attract pollinating insects and stand out beautifully against its long light green and strongly veined leaves.

Deutzias are a bush that has survived from old gardens and are considered almost indestructible, like lilacs and old roses. They require little attention but bring a great deal of satisfaction to gardeners. Among spring shrubs, the 'Perle Rose' deutzia stands out as it continues to bloom after others have finished. It can be used as a free hedge, mixed with other flowering shrubs such as kolwitzias, abelias, mock oranges, brooms, or gorse. Its limited growth also allows it to fit in small gardens.

The deutzia should be planted in a moist, humus-rich, limestone soil to achieve its peak flowering. Prune after flowering.

Planting and care

The Deutzia 'Perle Rose' is a low-maintenance plant that can grow well in most soil types, including ordinary, well-drained soil that is occasionally dry. However, it blooms more when planted in humus-rich, well-drained soil and a sunny location. Avoid planting it in compacted or waterlogged soil during winter. This highly resistant plant can tolerate temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F).
