Description

The Euonymus fortunei 'Dan's Delight' is a very pretty variety of creeping spindle, forming a compact bush with brightly variegated foliage edged with creamy white. Evergreen, this adorable little bush is a full part of the decor: it illuminates the rockery, forms an original and refined border, or decorates the terrace even in the middle of winter. It thrives in light shade, in ordinary soil, even limestone, but remaining moist.

Originally from Asia and northern China, Euonymus fortunei is a ground cover bush of the Celastraceae family with rather slow growth, perfectly hardy and tolerant of limestone in the soil.

'Dan's Delight' is a recent variety, appreciated for its compact habit and modest size, as well as for its particularly bright foliage. At maturity, this slow-growing cultivar will reach approximately 50 cm (19.7 in) in height with a spread of at least 50 cm. It develops flexible shoots that can be easily trained and have the ability to cling to their support thanks to climbing roots. The evergreen, elliptical leaves, 3 to 4 cm (1.2 to 1.6 in) long, serrated, show a dark green centre, widely edged with creamy white to pale yellow. In spring, insignificant flowering appears on the current year's shoots in the form of small clusters of greenish-white flowers. They give way to red berries, decorative but not edible, appreciated by birds.

Euonymus fortunei 'Dan's Delight' is valuable for creating the permanent structure of low beds and particularly contributes to the decoration of the terrace. Its variegated foliage enhances the flowering and is ideal in partially shaded areas of the garden. It grows in any well-drained soil and withstands salt spray and wind very well. It can be used in pots or containers on a terrace, in a rockery or as a border plant, and even to highlight the curve of a pathway or the steps of a staircase, or to cover the slope of a retaining wall. It is ideal for greening a small wall, without becoming uncontrollable. Pair it with other sturdy ground cover plants, such as Waldsteinia ternata, Bergenia, creeping cotoneaster, or other varieties of creeping spindles with variegated foliage. This variety tolerates pruning very well.

Planting and care

The Euonymus fortunei 'Dan's Delight' is preferably planted in spring in any well-drained soil that remains moist, in a sunny or lightly shaded location, even in shady areas in hot and very sunny regions. It tolerates the presence of limestone in the soil, but dislikes arid conditions. Its hardiness is excellent. Pruning is not essential, but it allows the plant to branch out. Pinch the young stems to encourage branching and remove any dead or diseased wood. Apply fertilizer twice a year, in early spring and autumn. In case of prolonged drought, water to maintain beautiful foliage.
