L’Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald ’n’ Gold’ fait partie de ces petits arbustes fiables qui apportent de la vie au jardin toute l’année. Son feuillage persistant, panaché de jaune d’or, illumine les bordures, les rocailles un peu ombragées et le sol sous les arbustes. En hiver, il prend des reflets roses à rougeâtres. Facile à tailler et peu exigeant en termes de sol, ce fusain s'utilise aussi bien en couvre-sol qu'en buisson ou en grimpante.
L’Euonymus fortunei, appelé fusain de Fortune ou fusain rampant, appartient à la famille des Célastracées. Cette espèce botanique est originaire d’une vaste région d’Asie orientale, où elle pousse dans les bois, les fourrés et sur les pentes. Le cultivar ‘Emerald ’n’ Gold’ a été sélectionné aux États-Unis par Corliss Brothers, à Ipswich dans le Massachusetts, en 1963. Il a reçu l’Award of Garden Merit de la Royal Horticultural Society pour ses qualités ornementales et sa fiabilité au jardin. La plante forme en une dizaine d’années un buisson dense et étalé de 50 à 60 cm de hauteur pour 1 m d’envergure. Ses rameaux souples s’enracinent parfois au contact du sol. Guidés contre un muret, un treillage ou un autre support, ils peuvent s’élever davantage grâce à des petites racines adventives. Les feuilles persistantes, opposées et finement dentées, mesurent généralement 2 à 4 cm de long. Le centre de leur limbe est vert foncé, il est entouré d’une large bordure jaune vif à dorée, qui se colore plus ou moins sous l’effet du froid. Quelques petites fleurs verdâtres et discrètes peuvent apparaître en juin sur les plantes adultes ; la fructification est peu fréquente en culture. Ce fusain est rustique jusqu’à –20 °C en sol drainé, même si son feuillage peut être abîmé par des vents glacés. Cette plante intégralement toxique pour l'homme attire les oiseaux.
Ce fusain s’emploie surtout en couvre-sol, en bordure basse, sur un talus pas trop aride ou au pied d’arbustes. On peut aussi l'accueillir dans un grand bac. Vous pouvez facilement créer une petite mosaïque persistante en l'associant à l’Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald Gaiety’, au Cotoneaster suecicus ‘Coral Beauty’ et au Lonicera pileata ‘Moss Green’. Il trouve aussi sa place sous un érable du Japon dans un jardin japonais, à condition que le sol ne soit pas trop sec. Résistant au vent et aux embruns, cet arbuste est aussi adapté aux jardins du littoral.

Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald ’n’ Gold’ should be planted from September to November or from March to May, avoiding periods of frost and drought. To create a continuous groundcover, space the young plants 60 to 80 cm apart. Sun intensifies the golden colouring of the foliage, but partial shade is preferable in hot areas. Shade is tolerated, but the variegation will be less bright. Plant it in an ordinary, well-drained soil that remains slightly moist, whether acid, neutral or alkaline. It tolerates clay soils if they are not waterlogged and, once well established, withstands moderate drought. Water regularly during the first two summers. Scale insects and powdery mildew may occasionally affect it.
