Description

The Euonymus fortunei 'Goldy' is a very pretty variety of creeping spindle, forming a compact bush with its bright golden foliage. An evergreen shrub that adds colour to any rockery, border, or terrace, even during winter. It thrives in light shade, ordinary soil, and even limestone as long as it's kept moist.

Native to Asia and northern China, Euonymus fortunei is a slow-growing ground cover shrub in the family Celastraceae, perfectly hardy and tolerant of limestone in the soil.

'Goldy' is a recent variety, appreciated for its compact habit and modest size, as well as for its particularly bright foliage. At maturity, this slow-growing cultivar will reach a height of about 50 cm (19.7 in) with a minimum spread of 50 cm (19.7 in). It develops flexible shoots that can be easily trained and have the ability to cling to their support thanks to climbing roots. The evergreen, elliptical leaves, 3 to 4 cm (1.2 to 1.6 in) long, serrated, are golden yellow, gradually turning green with age. In spring, insignificant flowering occurs on the current year's shoots in the form of small clusters of white-greenish flowers. They give way to decorative but non-edible red berries, appreciated by birds.

Euonymus fortunei 'Goldy' is ideal for creating the permanent structure of low borders and particularly contributes to the decoration of the terrace. Its golden foliage enhances its purple blooms and is perfect in partially shaded areas of the garden. It grows in any well-drained soil and tolerates salt spray and wind very well. It can be used in pots or containers on a terrace, in a rockery or as a border plant, and even to highlight the curve of a path or the steps of a staircase, or to cover the slope of a retaining wall. It is ideal for greening a low wall, without becoming uncontrollable. Pair it with other sturdy ground cover plants such as Walsteinia ternata, Bergenia, creeping cotoneasters, or other varieties of variegated creeping spindles. This variety tolerates pruning very well.

Tip: In case of drought, water to maintain beautiful foliage.

Planting and care

Euonymus fortunei 'Goldy' is preferably planted in spring in any well-drained, moisture-retentive soil, in a sunny or lightly shaded position, or even in shade in hot and sunny regions. It tolerates the presence of limestone in the soil, but fears arid conditions. Its hardiness is excellent. Pruning is not essential, but it allows the plant to branch out. Pinch the young shoots to encourage branching and remove dead or diseased wood. Apply fertilizer twice a year, in early spring and autumn. In case of prolonged drought, water to maintain a beautiful foliage.
