Hibiscus received, in a lamentable state. Most of the leaves are falling off, yellow or chlorotic, and the flowers are dried out. How can a plant be dispatched to a customer in such a condition, at that price? Is there any quality control before dispatch?

Description

Hibiscus syriacus 'French Point' is remarkable with its white and double flowers with crumpled and irregularly fringed cherry red petals. Despite its exotic appearance, it is perfectly hardy and tolerates pruning very well. It is a very easy-to-grow ornamental shrub that can be integrated into any type of garden.

Hibiscus belongs to the Malvaceae family. It has a highly branched habit with upright and rigid stems, forming a rounded bush with age. The leaves are deciduous, ovate, medium green, 6 to 10 cm (2.4 to 3.9 in) long, turning yellowish in autumn. It measures 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) to 3 m (9 ft 10 in) in height, with a spread of 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) to 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in). It can be kept smaller without any problem thanks to annual pruning (even hard pruning). It is suitable for small as well as large gardens. From July to October, large flowers appear at the axils of the leaves and on the year's new shoots, solitary or grouped in pairs, in a trumpet shape. The flowers are short-lived but are continuously renewed. The flower buds are beautifully turbinate. 'French Point', a recent variety, has very large semi-double flowers, 8 to 10 cm (3.1 to 3.9 in) in diameter, with crumpled, pure white petals and a dark red throat and fringes. After flowering, dehiscent capsules with 5 valves appear, containing hairy seeds.

A very easy-to-grow shrub with a great adaptability, Hibiscus syriacus 'French Point' grows in ordinary soil and in sunny to partially shaded locations. Particularly decorative and elegant, this tree mallow can be installed in multiple ways in the garden: as a standalone specimen, in a shrub border, or in a mixed hedge. It is also possible to train Hibiscus syriacus as a standard; this pruning technique aims to create a short trunk while preserving the volume of the crown over the years, making the shrub original and floriferous. This way, the Rose of Sharon will be perfectly suited for container gardening on a balcony. As its root system is quite extensive, a large and deep container should be provided. Planting a group of several garden hibiscus of different varieties will create a beautiful effect, playing with the contrasting colours of the flowers and foliage.

Hibiscus is a beautiful bush with an exotic appearance that captivates with its magnificent flowering in corollas. Ephemeral, its stunning flowers only last a day, but they continuously renew themselves, providing a perpetual display from July to October. The numerous species and varieties of hardy hibiscus offer an extraordinary palette of colours, ranging from pure white to purple, including pink and bright red. The delicate petals generally surround a colourful heart, giving them a very tropical style that rivals their cousin from the islands, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. Hardy down to -15°C, hardy hibiscus or altheas (H. syriacus and H. paramutabilis) easily settle in all our regions, provided their roots are kept cool. They look wonderful as a solitary specimen in the middle of a short grass meadow, but can also be integrated into a flowering hedge or a summer border. Their lushness will be perfectly highlighted at the edge of a pond, but also in a pot kept well-watered, bringing a touch of the islands to a terrace or balcony. All hibiscus indeed grow very well in pots, a cultivation method that offers the advantage of being able to winter them out of frost in regions with particularly cold winters. Easy to care for, hardy hibiscus require little maintenance. In sufficiently cool or moist soil, depending on the species, they develop harmoniously until October. Pruning is recommended during the dormant phase but remains optional. The hibiscus then reappears in spring, sometimes a bit lazily, to offer a profusion of delicate and colourful flowers from July, creating an exotic decor that leaves no one indifferent!

Planting and care

Hibiscus syriacus 'French Point' will ideally be planted in full sun, or even partial shade, in a humus-bearing, moist but well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. It tolerates limestone well. Althaea needs a long and hot summer to flower well. Planting can be done in autumn or spring. As flowering is late, it is advisable to shelter them with a wall in north-facing gardens. It should be noted that late spring frosts and cold winds can damage the developing flower buds. Once established, this very beautiful shrub, with fairly rapid growth and hardy up to -20 °C (-4 °F), is a truly easy and undemanding plant. Good fertilisation can be carried out in spring to stimulate growth and flowering. During hot spells in summer, generous watering is necessary, especially in the first years following planting. Under good growing conditions, the plant can produce shoots of 30 to 40 cm (11.8 to 15.7 in) in length per year. No diseases are to be feared, except for some attacks by aphids in May-June. In cooler climates, it is preferable to choose a variety with single flowers for a more abundant flowering.
