Beautiful young plant with well-established roots, featuring foliage turning burgundy in cold weather. Received as shown in the presentation photo. Planting upon receipt in conjunction with an Ilex Blue Angel (for its beautiful fruiting) in the orchard along the path of the chickens and geese, on the edge of the woodland in partial shade. Waiting for it to take root.

Description

The ilex meserveae 'Blue Prince', commonly known as American holly, is a bushy shrub with highly decorative foliage of a lovely shiny green with a bluish hue. Its white flowers bloom from April to June. This holly remains beautiful all year round, even in winter when other plants are dormant.

Originally from North America, the Ilex meserveae 'Blue Prince' has a spreading and bushy habit, reaching 2 to 3m (6.6 - 9.8ft) in width. From April to June it produces beautiful small umbels of white flowers variegated with pink, but does not produce fruit. This shrub has a flowering period that allows for excellent pollination. Its leaves, measuring 4 to 5cm (1.6 - 2in) in length, are vivid green with a bluish hue, spiny and alternate, making its foliage highly decorative even during winter periods. Its young stems are purple to red in colour and gradually turn greenish-purple over time.

Planted individually or shaped into topiary, it will capture attention. It should be planted in an open position for regular growth on all sides. It can also be used for low hedges, in borders, containers and rock gardens.

Evergreen down to -15°C (5°F), the Blue Prince holly thrives in a sunny or partially shaded position. Plant it in a neutral to acidic, humus-bearing, moist and light soil. For low hedge planting, space at intervals of 50cm (19.7 in). Plant from September to March and prune from March to April. This shrub is resistant to air pollution and sea spray.
