Description
The Ilex crenata 'Convexa', a variety of crenate holly or Japanese holly, is a small compact bush with evergreen foliage that resembles that of boxwood. Often used in Japanese gardens, it tolerates pruning very well, such as in the Niwaki style. Take your first steps in the art of topiary with this bush.
Ilex crenata is one of the species, native to Japan, introduced to Europe in 1760. 'Convexa' is a horticultural variety. Crenate Holly 'Convexa' forms a small bush that reaches a height of between 1 and 3m (9.8 ft). It has stiff branches and small shiny green leaves with a convex shape resembling the leaves of boxwood measuring 1 to 3cm (0.4 - 1.2in) in length. Insignificant white flowers appear in May-June, and in autumn the bush bears small shiny black berries measuring 2 to 6mm (0.1 - 0.2in), which last throughout the winter.
Slow growing Ilex crenata 'Convexa' dislikes excessive chalk and prefers moist, well-drained, rich and humus-bearing soil. Hardy below -15°C (5°F), it likes partially shaded to shaded areas. Planting is possible under trees and large shrubs. Water it during dry periods and in summer.
It attracts attention when planted as a standalone plant and formed into a topiary. Plant it in an open location for regular growth on all sides.
It can also be used as a low hedge, in mass plantings, and in large pots. Plant it generously in Zen gardens alongside bamboo, Japanese maples, camellias...

Planting and care
When planting Ilex crenata 'Convexa', add some compost and incorporate it into the topsoil of your garden. In the early years, do some training pruning by selecting the branches you want to keep. Step back to view your holly as a whole in order to determine the shape and arrangement of the short stems. Ilex crenata 'Convexa' is susceptible to white scale insects in spring and mites and aphids in summer. Apply a preventive treatment at the beginning of the season.
