Description

Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' is a small bushy Japanese maple with a slow growth rate. It is appreciated for its apple-green foliage, which resembles aconite leaves (hence its other name, "Aconite-leaved maple"). In autumn, the leaves turn ruby red.

Originating from Japan, this small tree can reach a height of 3m (10ft). It is perfectly hardy, but does not tolerate high temperatures well. Initially shrubby, it forms a small trunk and a well-rounded shape with widely spreading branches. The deciduous foliage is opposite and deeply divided into 7 or 11 toothed lobes. It gradually changes from tender green in summer to flamboyant ruby red in autumn. The small purple flowers appear before the leaves and are borne in pendant corymbs on long peduncles. The flowers are followed by winged fruits measuring 3cm (1in) in length.

Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' thrives in preferably acidic, moist, fertile, well-drained soil, in a semi-shaded position, sheltered from cold winds. Provide mulch and water. Protect the young bark from rabbits. Pruning is unnecessary.

Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' is ideal as a specimen or in groups in ericaceous beds accompanied by hydrangeas, rhododendrons, hostas, and ferns.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or autumn in preferably acidic, cool, fertile, loose and well-drained soil, in a semi-shaded position sheltered from cold winds. Keep the soil moist during the first two summers after planting. Mulching can be beneficial to maintain good soil moisture. Do not prune. Protect the bark from rabbits. Beware of spring frosts, cold winds, and excessively dry atmospheres.
