A young plant that grew well in the spring, unfortunately it suffered from the scorching heat this summer despite regular watering. The foliage has completely wilted.

Description

The Magnolia denudata Double Diamond is a small tree or deciduous bush naturally rounded, with sprawling branches, reaching 3 to 4 m (9 ft 10 in to 13 ft 1 in) in height at 10 years, and can grow up to 8 to 10 m at maturity.

Originating from central and eastern China where it is a symbol of purity, the Magnolia denudata Double Diamond or Magnolia Yulan is hardy up to -15°C. Large white flowers of pure immaculate white, with a delicate lemon scent, open in a cup shape in March-April on dark wood before the appearance of very large leaves (10 to 15 cm (3.9 to 5.9 in)) dark green ovate. The flowers then give way to green, then brown, cone-shaped fruits that ripen in early autumn to reveal inner seeds of a brilliant red.

The Magnolia Yulan is used as an isolated plant in a strategic location in the garden to enjoy its spectacular flowering and its sweet scent.

The species "denudata" is derived from the Latin word "nude" and directly refers to the fact that the flowers open when the tree is "naked", without leaves.

Planting and care

The Magnolia denudata 'Double Diamond' enjoys a rich, cool, slightly acidic soil without too much limestone, with constant moisture throughout the year, encouraged by a bark mulch. It appreciates full sun or semi-shade exposure in a sheltered situation, protected from violent and dry winds to prolong its flowering. As it is averse to disturbance, its location must be well thought out and it should not be planted too deep. The fragile and shallow roots leave little room for vegetation under the branches. Only a few shallow root perennial groundcover or small spring bulbs can suitably complete the display, while helping to maintain the constant moisture that the Magnolia denudata Double Diamond needs. A hole allowing for 80 cm (31.5 in) on all sides and as deep should be planned, with an addition of peat and compost. Take great care when placing it in the hole, so as not to break the roots which are fleshy, but quite fragile.Water immediately with non-limestone water (rain water) to allow the soil to settle around the roots. During the first year of planting, the Magnolia will require weekly watering. It will welcome a supplement once a year in spring. If planting in limestone soil, it will be necessary to replace your soil with peat, pine bark, leaf compost, and heath soil.
