Description

The Magnolia Elizabeth is a very floriferous bush from May to June. The yellow flower buds give way to cream flowers. The cup-shaped flowers are large (15 cm (6 in) in diameter).

The foliage of the Magnolia Elizabeth is deciduous. Bronze when young, it turns a dark green color afterwards. This vigorous species has excellent hardiness.

At maturity, the Magnolia Elizabeth can reach a height of 1.8 m (6 ft). Plant it individually in your garden or with evergreen foliage bushes like Rhododendrons. This hybrid is the result of cross-breeding between Magnolia acuminata and Magnolia denudata.

Planting and care

The Magnolia Elizabeth requires a few hours of direct sunlight, so cultivate it in full sun or partial shade but not in complete shade. Keep it protected from cold winds. Plant it in moist, rich, deep, well-drained, and preferably neutral soil or in ericaceous soil. In lime-free soil, dig a large planting hole and add ericaceous soil mixed with your garden soil. However, it is less sensitive to limestone than the species type. Mulch the Magnolia to prevent it from freezing during heavy spring frosts, especially young plants. Water it in case of drought, but usually rainfall will be sufficient for watering once established. From February to June, before the vegetation emerges, remove dead or diseased wood as well as crossing branches. Prune it gradually to give it its shape, with branches growing from the base of the plant.
