Description

Magnolia Susan is a shrub with a habit that is less spreading than most magnolias but rather upright. Its main attraction is that its flowers appear before the leaves. From April to May, the dark purple flower buds give way to abundant slightly fragrant flowers, which are purple-pink and lighter on the inside.

The 6 petals that make up the flower are slightly curved to give the flower a tulip-shaped form. These are large flowers that measure 10 to 15 cm (3.9 to 5.9 in) in diameter. Magnolia Susan has deciduous foliage. Of a tender green colour, the large leaves measure 10 to 15 cm (3.9 to 5.9 in) long and are distinctly marked by veins. Magnolia Susan can reach a height of 3 to 4 m (9 ft 10 in to 13 ft).

A very hardy plant, you can plant it alone in your garden as a flowering hedge or in a large bed with evergreen shrubs like Rhododendrons. It is an excellent choice for small gardens. Magnolia can also be cultivated in a pot. This Susan hybrid is the result of cross-breeding between Magnolia liliflora Nigra and Magnolia stellata Rosea.

Planting and care

Magnolia Susan needs a few hours of direct sunlight, so grow it in full sun or partial shade but not in total shade. Keep it protected from cold winds. Plant it in a cool, rich, deep, well-drained and preferably neutral soil or in ericaceous soil. In limestone soil, dig a large planting hole (80 cm (31.5 in) wide by 60 cm (23.6 in) deep) and add ericaceous soil mixed with your garden soil. However, it is less sensitive to limestone than the type species. Mulch the Magnolia to prevent it from freezing during heavy spring frosts, especially young plants. Water it in case of drought. When it grows larger, rainfall will be sufficient for watering. From February to June, before the vegetation appears, remove dead or diseased wood as well as any crossing branches. Prune it gradually to give it its shape, with branches growing from the base of the plant.
