Description
The Magnolia tripetala or Umbrella Magnolia is a lovely exception to most Magnolias. In this natural variety, it is not the flower but the foliage that attracts attention. The green color is particularly vibrant and its unique appearance gives it a very interesting exotic feeling. In autumn, it takes on pretty coppery shades.
The spreading, umbrella-like habit and the foliage gives it an effective and original element of exotic charm. The leaves measure between 20 and 60 cm (8 and 24in) long and are clustered at the end of the branches. Native to the United States, the Magnolia tripetala prefers acidic soils but is completely hardy. It is a small tree, reaching a height of 5-6m (16-20ft), sometimes a little more.
Its size being quite limited, it elegantly fills gardens of all sizes. It is perfect when planted in isolation. Its foliage in summer limits the light at its base so if you wish to enhance it, choose some shade-loving perennials and ericaceous plants.
Flowering features cream-white tulip shaped 18-20cm (7-8in) cups which bloom in May. However, the scent of its flowers is often described as unpleasant.

Planting and care
The Magnolia tripetala or umbrella tree is grown in partial shade or sunlight, full shade is not suitable for it. It is wise to find a place sheltered from winds, as its large leaves can tear in strong gusts. Plant it in a moist, rich, deep and well-drained soil. In limestone soil, dig a large planting hole and add ericaceous compost mixed with your garden soil. You will need to occasionally amend with iron or organic matter to replenish the plant's mineral supply. In cases of drought, keep it well watered. Pruning is not necessary, however you can thin out the center of the bush by removing some interlacing branches.
