Description

The Tulip Double You is a vibrant and cheerful variety, with a lilac-purple colour reminiscent of the fragrant clusters of lilac that will bloom in harmony in the garden, as well as in bouquets, in April - May. Its large double flowers, also called peony flowers, are lightly scented and its 45cm (18in) stems are firm and sturdy, giving the plant excellent presence in borders or vases.

Modern tulips are distant descendants of wild tulips, originating from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, and all have good hardiness. In general, tulips prefer climates with cold winters and dry, hot summers.

Tulipa 'Double You' belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin and not widely available for sale, it is currently classified in the group of 'Late Double Tulips', whose main characteristic is very double and crumpled flowers, resembling peonies. 'Double You' is medium-sized (45 cm (18in)) and its double and well-arranged flower is generous, with a diameter of 10-12 cm (4-5in). It begins blooming in a purple-violet colour, fading slightly at full bloom, especially at the edges of the petals which become pale mauve by the end of flowering. The shape of its shell-like petals and their satin texture adds extra charm, making it a true favourite, especially when its buds slowly open in a vase. It will flower from late April to mid-May, towards the end of the tulip season.

The late double tulip 'Double You' will fit well in large borders with forget-me-nots, bellflowers, money plants, or dame's rocket. It can also be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots and containers. This tulip will be beautiful on balconies and terraces. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials and is ideal for creating elegant bouquets, with madonna lilies, the first small red roses and clusters of white or mauve lilacs. When placing it in a vase, use very little water, just a little at the bottom is enough! If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day. Tulips are unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens. Remember to consider the height and flowering period when designing your borders, as these can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for stunning long-lasting cut flowers.

Planting and care

Plant 'Double You' tulip bulbs in the autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. 'Double You' will thrive in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Once flowering is finished, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
