Description

The 'Soulman' dahlia is part of the anemone flowered dahlias family; its captivating colour will not leave you indifferent.

This summer bulb can reach a height of 70cm (28in), making it a medium-sized but compact variety.

The reddish purple, almost garnet flowers have a row of often irregular outer petals and a significant, prominent centre representing two-thirds of the total diameter. The centre is double, like a very tight beehive called "the hive". The flowers will appear from July and last until the first frost; they are ideal for bouquets.

The foliage of the dahlia is deciduous and imposing. The 'Soulman' dahlia should be planted in ordinary, humus-bearing, well-drained soil in full light.

At the first frost, the bulbs should be stored in a dry place, protected from light and frost.

Plant with white dahlias to create beautiful bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant your dahlias in the springtime in well-worked and enriched soil, for example with blood, fish and bone. Place your tuber and crumble the soil to fill without any air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with 6 cm (2in) of soil. At the end of planting, pour one litre of water. Water regularly for the first 6 weeks to aid in root growth. Dahlias are sensitive to cold. They need to be overwintered. In November, the first frost will blacken the foliage, which is the time to dig them up. Carefully remove the tubers, taking off as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so the tuber can replenish its reserves. When the foliage is dry, cut the stems to 10 cm (4in) from the tuber. Spread your bulbs in a box on newspaper. Store in a cool, dry, dark place protected from frost.
