Description

'Rozalynn' is an excellent variety of Asian lily, compact, floriferous and robust, offering charming pink flowers touched with white throughout the month of July. Well-displayed, they bloom on a modest stature plant, particularly suitable for container cultivation. This hardy and vigorous variety is easy to grow, even for a novice gardener. Lovely as a border or container plant, it can also be included in small summer bouquets with miniature roses.

The Rozalynn lily belongs to the Liliaceae family and is part of the group of Asian lilies, known for their robustness and spectacular flowering. This lily variety was selected by QJ Vink & Zn Ltd in 2017 for its compact habit and ease of cultivation. At maturity, the plant reaches a height of 40 to 50 cm and a width of about 25 cm. It flowers in July. Each stem bears up to 7 upright flowers in a cup shape, measuring on average 16 cm in diameter. The petals, soft pink with white nuances, have an elegant appearance without emitting any fragrance, a typical characteristic of Asian lilies. The dark green leaves, 10 cm long and narrow (about 1.2 cm wide), elegantly line up along strong stems. The plant grows relatively quickly, forming dense clumps, ideal for dense or mass plantings. This lily's vegetation is deciduous: it emerges in spring and withers before winter, while the bulb goes dormant.

A plant for light and fertile soil, this 'Rozalynn' lily thrives year after year in any well-drained soil. Perfect for creating colourful borders or enhancing a corner of the terrace when planted in a lovely pot. This lily easily pairs with other perennials in complementary or harmonious colours. For example, combine it with small pink roses like dwarf rose 'Charmant', light-coloured daylilies such as ‘Catherine Woodbury’, and the perennial geranium 'Rozanne', which extends its blue flowers into autumn, along with Heuchera ‘Palace Purple’ with deep purple foliage. Together, these plants create a harmonious and lasting scene, with a subtle palette and successive blooms that will enliven the borders from early summer to the first frosts.

Planting and care

The 'Rozalynn' lily is not demanding regarding the soil, as long as it is properly drained and not excessively calcareous or acidic. It appreciates light soils, rich in humus or leaf compost. Plant it in full sun, with the base in shade, preferably in spring, burying the bulbs 15 cm deep in a pocket of soil mixed with leaf compost. Surround them with a pocket of sand to prevent rot and slug attacks, while allowing them to grow more easily. Mark the planting location, as the vegetation only starts in April. If red insects appear, treat them promptly; they are lily beetles whose larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them by hand, but be careful as they drop as soon as they are touched, so place a box underneath.

After flowering, it is useful to cut the faded flowers halfway to keep the bed beautiful during the summer.

Tip for planting lilies in compact soil: The scaly bulbs of lilies are sensitive to clay soils that suffocate them and cause rot. In Eastern Europe, the following technique is used to help these bulbs survive the winter. Plant them on 'benches' built above ground level. These benches consist of a first layer of gravel, on which tightly packed branches are placed. Then cover everything with a thick layer of compost 20 to 30 cm deep. Plant the bulbs in the compost, where you can also let some ground-cover plants creep.

On the terrace, you can create sumptuous pots with lilies. Choose a container that is wide and deep enough (at least 16 cm in diameter for 1 bulb). Fill it with a mix of garden soil, leaf compost, and sand. Plant the lilies in groups of 3 to 5 bulbs, 10-15 cm apart, then water thoroughly. Place the pots in a cool room, or outside once the frosts have passed. The ambient temperature should be around 12°C. When shoots appear, move the pot to a bright conservatory or room, at a temperature of around 18°C. Feed with liquid fertilizer twice a month until the flower buds appear.
