An undershrub which forms a rounded and highly flowering clump in summer. The highly dissected foliage is grey-green and it flowers abundantly in small bright yellow daisies with a dark yellow centre from May-June to September-October, if faded flowers are removed. This perennial is content with ordinary soil, requires a sunny exposure, and does not tolerate winter moisture if the soil is not properly drained.

Description

The 'Kelwayi' Dyer's Chamomile, known by its Latin name Anthemis tinctoria, is a branching undershrub with highly dissected foliage, reminiscent of fennel, in a grey-green colour. From spring to autumn, it is covered with small bright yellow daisies with a darker yellow centre. This perennial is very hardy and easy to grow in well-drained soil, ideal for rock gardens or sunny slopes.

Anthemis tinctoria, also known as False Chamomile or Dyer's Chamomile, belongs to the asteraceae family. It is native to Europe and Asia Minor. 'Kelwayi' Anthemis forms a medium-sized plant, reaching 50 to 70 cm high and 50 cm wide at maturity. It has a bushy habit and forms a mound of very light foliage from spring onwards. Its growth is rapid. The abundant flowering takes place from May-June to September-October, if faded flowers are regularly removed. The flowers resemble small semi-double, 2 cm wide daisies with a dark yellow centre. Surrounding it are peripheral, ligulate, female, bright yellow ray florets. The stems are well-branched, with green leaves and a greyish and hairy underside. The abundant foliage is dark green, deciduous, and aromatic when crushed. This variety readily self-seeds in the garden.

Anthemis plants thrive in sunny and well-drained soil, and they dislike excessive moisture in winter. The soil should therefore be well-drained, which is their only requirement. Plant them in ordinary, limestone, neutral, or slightly acidic soil. They form rounded and flowering clumps, which can be combined with blue-flowered plants such as asters, lavender, borage, and perennial flax. In countryside flower beds, alongside simple flowers like snapdragons, wallflowers, baptisias, or common sage, they quickly form rounded and flowering clumps. They can also be planted in rock gardens and borders. Their foliage pairs well with grey-leaved plants like wormwoods. They also thrive in pots.

Planting and care

Anthemis tinctoria can be sown under cover or directly in open ground in spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October).

Sow the seeds in pots indoors from March or sow directly in well-prepared and loosened soil in late spring, once all danger of frost has passed. For best results, choose a very sunny location and well-drained, not too rich soil.

For indoor sowing, sow in pots or trays of good compost. Barely cover the seeds with a pinch of compost and make sure the substrate remains moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually takes 30 to 60 days at 13°C. Transplant the seedlings into pots when they are large enough to handle. Plant them in their final location in late spring or early summer, after the last frost, 30 cm apart. Water regularly during the first two weeks for potted plants to establish. Increase watering during periods of drought or extreme heat. Additional feeding is generally not necessary. Removing faded flowers will prolong the flowering time. Pruning the foliage after flowering will help rejuvenate the plant. It is best to divide clumps every two years, in spring or autumn, to maintain plant vigour.
