Description

Armeria maritima 'Splendens', commonly known as Sea Thrift, is a small perennial that forms low, evergreen blue-green clumps covered in bright pink globe-shaped flowerheads from May to August. Easy to grow, resistant to wind, drought and cold weather, its only requirement is to be grown in full sun, in well-drained soil. Ideal for rock gardens, seaside gardens or as ground cover.

'Splendens' Sea Drift belongs to the Plumbaginaceae family. It is one of the many cultivars of Armeria maritima, a hardy perennial native to the mountainous and coastal regions of the northern hemisphere. It forms compact, dense clumps that measure 10 cm in height and 30 cm in width, for about 30 cm in full bloom. Armeria maritima 'Splendens' has a remarkably long flowering period, starting in May and ending in August. Sometimes it will repeat flower in late summer. The flowers are bright pink to red and grouped in dense, globe-shaped flowerheads at the top of long, rigid stems. The evergreen, grass-like foliage is a bright bluish-green colour and is especially ornamental in winter.

Armeria maritima 'Splendens' is above all a sun-loving plant that will work wonders as a low-maintenance ground-cover, rockery or border plant. It can be associated with other perennials that require the same growing conditions: carnations, Artemisia lanata, Globe daisies, Creeping Gypsophila, Helichrysum angustifolium, Cerastium tomentosum, or Erigeron karvinskianus. It is also well-suited for growing in pots.

Planting and care

Before sowing, soak the seeds in water for 6 to 8 hours. Sow from late March to May at 16-18°C in good quality soil and cover with a fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Place in a propagator or inside a polyethylene bag until germination (14-21 days).

When the plants are strong enough to handle, transplant them into pots and move them to a cooler place until they are ready to taken outdoors. Harden them off gradually and plant them out in in the autumn in a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Make sure to leave about 30 cm between each plant.

Once established, Armeria maritima settles for poor, sandy soils and are particularly suited to seaside gardens. In heavy soil, amend with rough sand or gravel to improve drainage.
