Description
These small-fruited gourds are annual climbing or creeping plants. They are cultivated for decorative purposes only. They come in a beautiful range of shapes and variegated colours. Their bitter flesh contains some medicinal properties and is used in herbal medicine. However, it is toxic when consumed directly.
Cucurbita pepo is part of the large Cucurbitaceae family. Like all squashes, gourds prefer rich and moist soil. Provide them with plenty of water and well-decomposed compost or manure so that they can develop to the fullest and produce numerous fruits.
Most varieties are climbing. Their flexible branches bear tendrils that attach themselves to the support provided, exposing their fruits to the sun as best as possible. If they do not have support, they will spread on the ground. Plant them in a warm and sunny location.
Harvest the decorative fruits in September-October, before the first frost. Keep part of the stalk attached to the fruit. Store them in a warm and dry place. The flesh will dry out in a few weeks. The dried fruits can then be used for decoration in the house. The cultivation and abundant harvest of these colourful mini-pumpkins are a great opportunity to introduce children to gardening.

Planting and care
Sow the seeds in mid-April. Prepare your pots with good quality soil, possibly enriched with compost. Sow 2 to 3 seeds in each hole. Cover the seeds, lightly tamp down the soil, and water thoroughly with a fine spray. Place your pots in a well-lit area, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 15 to 20°C (59 to 68°F).
The seeds will take about 7 days to germinate. Once the plants have developed two healthy leaves, pinch the top of the stem to cut it off. This will encourage the formation of lateral branches. Repeat this operation a few weeks later, above the fifth leaf. 15 days before their final placement, start gradually acclimatising them to a temperature of 15°C (59°F).
By the end of May or early June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location. Add a good shovelful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 1 to 2m (3 to 7ft) apart.
Provide them with a support, such as a fence or even the low branches of an old tree.
Harvest the fruits in autumn before the first frost and dry them before using them for decoration. During drying, wipe the fruits with a soft, dry cloth to remove any superficial mould that may appear.
