Description

The Liatris spicata, also known as Blazing Star or Spike Gayfeather, has a very structuring power in flower beds: it brings verticality where horizontality predominates and brings a harmonious visual balance in the background of flower beds.

The Liatris spicata is a herbaceous perennial with an upright habit from the Asteraceae family, native to North America. The tall, stiff stems topped with long spikes of 40 cm (15.7 in) and more, in shades of pinkish purple, rise over a meter from the ground. The overall shape resembles that of a candle. The small flowers arranged in head of 10 to 18 elements have filaments that give them a feathery characteristic. They bloom from the top to the base of the spike throughout the summer, from June to late September. The basal leaves form a medium green clump and are directly inserted onto the stem without a petiole. They are long, slender, linear, and whorled, densely covering the stem up to the base of the spike.

It is a very melliferous plant that also attracts butterflies. The flowers can be used in fresh or dried bouquets. You will plant it in full sun, in even poor but well-drained soil. In this case, the Liatris spicata tolerates being planted around a water feature. Please note that it only blooms in the second year! The first year will allow you to appreciate its foliage.
