Description

Lychnis chalcedonica, also known as Jerusalem Cross, Lychnide or Burning Love, is a herbaceous perennial, whose umbels are made up of multiple small, bright red flowers blooming from June to August. This Lychnide allows you to give a note of color in a mass and to compose bunchs. It is rather resistant to diseases, cold and dryness.

By observing the small flowers of Lychnis chalcedonica, gathered in umbels, you will notice five petals, the upper part of which is slightly divided in two. This shape gaved it the name of Maltese or Jerusalem Cross. Its strong color is an undeniable asset for lighting a massif. It therefore naturally finds its place in a multicolored set. However, you can associate it with a deep blue to promote contrasts or install it in partial shade to attract the eye.

The stem of this Lychnis is erect, covered with thick bristles and has an umbel at its end. Its rather thick, lanceolate, opposite leaves are light green in color. Its bearing, not bushy, will encourage you to install it in groups in order to enrich the whole and renew the flowering. Its size gives it a place in the middle or bottom of a massif. It prefers rather cool soils and will thrive in full sun in cold regions. In rich ground, it will be able to reseed.

This perennial, a little forgotten nowadays, will bring joy while being easy to live with.

Planting and care

Two solutions are possible for sowing the Jerusalem Cross: in Spring or in autumn. If you choose to sow Spring, you can do it in containers under shelters from March (if the climate in your region is rather mild, otherwise prefer April): the seeds will be buried under a few millimeters of light and wet maintained substrate without soaking it. As soon as the seedlings have reached 5/6 cm and the strongest periods of frost are over, you can install them in place and monitor their watering to get through the summer. Fall sowing can be done directly in place. Take the same precautions: the soil will be loosened before placing the seeds one by one spaced apart (at a distance of 30 cm from each other). They will just be covered with a thin layer and watered. In both cases the first flowering will take place the following summer.
