Description

Verbena tenuisecta Desert Jewels Mixed, also called moss vervain or cutleaf verbena, is a perennial that is grown as an annual, that displays a spreading habit and which covers itself with tiny flowers gathered in bouquets in a harmonious blend of colours, from April to July. Ideal for borders, rock gardens or as a ground cover in sunny areas.

Native to South America and belonging to the family Verbenaceae, moss verbena is a fast-growing plant. The plant's growth habit is compact and spreading: it reaches a maximum of 20 cm in height and 60 cm in width. Its tiny flowers are gathered in corymbs. Its evergreen foliage is composed of small, finely cut leaves that are lace-like.

It thrives in the sun or partial shade, in dry, well-drained, even stony soils. It is a half-hardy perennial that is often used as an annual. As such, it will only survive in regions with mild winters.

It is sensational planted in groups, as a ground cover in a dry garden, in the company of ornamental grasses or in a pot with Heliotrope and Helichrysum petiolare Silver.

Planting and care

Sow from February to April, in a tray or directly in a pot, in a well-drained, good quality seed starting mix. Place the container somewhere warm, maintaining at an optimal temperature between 24 and 27 °C. The seeds must barely be covered and must be put in a bright place as light promotes germination. Keep the compost barely wet until seed emergence which occurs 14 to 21 days after.

When the seedlings are large enough to be handled, transplant them if necessary, into small pots and gradually acclimatize the young plants to outdoor conditions for a few weeks before planting them out in the garden, 30 cm apart.
