Phlox drummondii Cherry Caramel Seeds - Drummonds phlox

Phlox drummondii 'Cherry Caramel' is a new variety of Drummond's phlox whose summer blooms are an absolute delight. The countless small flowers of this new variety display an irresistible hue of caramel cream or café au lait, surrounding a vibrant cherry-pink centre, whilst each of them possesses their own distinct personality. Its large, cllustered panicles appear throughout the summer, borne on sturdy, very upright stems. The nectar-rich and melliferous blooms attract butterflies and embellish bouquets. A sweet yet original, low-maintenance plant, ideal for brightening up the borders of flower beds and window-boxes.

Drummond's Phlox owes its name to a Scottish naturalist, Thomas Drummond, who discovered the plant in the grasslands of Texas in 1830. This annual species of the Polemoniaceae family is small (15 to 30 cm high) and forms a bushy clump. Its leaves are green, lanceolate and form a dense background that hosts panicles of various colours. They consist of multiple star-shaped flowers (about 2 cm in diameter) with a tube-shaped corolla ending in five lobes. They are slightly fragrant and bring an undeniable charm to romantic gardens. 'Cherry Caramel' is a variety that measures 25 cm tall and 30 cm wide and features truly exceptional blossoms which blend shades of soft caramel and bright pink. The flowers give way to small, dark seeds that are self-seed easily.

Drummond’s phlox needs sunny positions and a fertile but well-drained soil to flower generously. The unique and attractive colours of the Phlox Cherry Caramel will be perfect for bordering walkways, enhancing beds but also for adorning the patio, in a well-chosen pot. The sowing is easy and allows for the quick production of a large number of plants that can be scattered throughout the garden, not too far from the house, so as to enjoy the unique spectacle of their blooms from up close. This phlox can be placed in front of a bower of purple foliage (Cimicifuga 'Brunette', Physocarpus 'Lady in Red', Berberis 'Atropururea nana'), or silver foliage (silver ragwort, sagebrush).
