Good seed germination, in a heated greenhouse. I'm looking forward to seeing the flowers this summer.

Description

This selection of Ageratum houstonianum Timeless Mixed, also known as Mexican Paintbrush, produces fairly tall plants that bloom all summer long, with fluffy ball-shaped flowers in three shades of pink, white, and blue, reminiscent of 'cotton candy'. This mix is ideal for adding height to borders or for making long-lasting bouquets. A perennial plant grown as an annual, it thrives in the sun and prefers moist soil.

The Timeless Ageratum mix is a selection of varieties derived from Ageratum houstonianum, a perennial plant grown as an annual from the aster family, native to Central America and the Caribbean. The plants in this selection are relatively tall for the species. They form rounded, dense masses of foliage, reaching 45 cm (18in) in all directions. Very branched and covered in hairs, their numerous stems stand upright while spreading out. The leaves, also hairy, are toothed and oval-shaped. They are sometimes heart-shaped at the base, and their colour is green, more or less dark. From April until early autumn, the flowers bloom continuously if faded flowers are removed regularly. The inflorescences are blue, white, or pink heads, grouped in clusters of pompoms, almost completely hiding the foliage.

Mexican ageratums are often planted in urban landscaping. Their abundant flowers and bright colours allow for interesting combinations with many other low-growing plants in flowerbeds: marigolds, marigold calendulas, or red salvias. It is easy to create a pastel carpet by mixing them with pink begonias and impatiens. The Timeless selection is perfect for making beautiful bouquets. These plants also perform very well in pots, indoors, on the patio, or balcony.

Mexican Paintbrush is a plant that promotes insect pollination. Bees, butterflies, and others.

Planting and care

SOWING: Sow on the surface of a well-drained and moist compost, and cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite. Place the sowing under a greenhouse or keep it in a polyethylene bag at around 20-30°C (68-86°F) until the end of germination, which takes from 7 to 21 days. Expose to light to promote germination.

CULTIVATION: When the young plants are sufficiently developed to be handled, transplant them in clusters into trays or 8cm (3in) pots. Acclimatise them to cooler conditions for a few days before planting them in the ground when all risk of frost has disappeared. Space them 30cm (12in) apart.
