Description

Antirrhinum majus 'Madame Butterfly F1 Pink' is a variety of hybrid snapdragon that produces charming, fully double flowers like tiny peonies in shades of candy pink to soft pink. Award-winning in flower competitions, the 'Madame Butterfly F1' series is renowned for its vigour, floriferousness and the beauty of its flower spikes. Familiar inhabitants of cottage gardens, charming in flower arrangements, snapdragons are short-lived plants, easy to grow in full sun, in any fertile, well-drained soil.

Botanically, Madame Butterfly F1 Pink belongs to the Plantaginaceae family. The type species Antirrhinum majus is known by the common names large snapdragon, common snapdragon, garden snapdragon, or lion's mouth. It is a Mediterranean perennial with a semi-woody base, often grown as an annual or biennial, native to southern and south-central France, north-eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands, where it is found growing spontaneously on cliffs, old walls, dry banks and stony soils.
The cultivar Madame Butterfly Pink F1 is part of a series of hybrids with double flowers known as "azalea type", which won awards in international competitions in the early 1970s. Compared to the single-flowered snapdragon, this cultivar offers very double corollas, longer-lasting in the vase, but less accessible to pollinating insects. The plant forms a clump that branches from its base.

In cultivation, Madame Butterfly F1 Pink reaches 70 to 80cm in height with a spread of 30 to 40cm. Its upright, more or less branched stems bear medium green, lanceolate, deciduous leaves. In a 5 to 7 litre pot, the plant remains slightly more compact, around 50 to 60cm tall. From June-July to October, each stem bears a long, dense spike of double flowers 2 to 3cm in diameter. The numerous petals display a palette of soft and pastel pinks, from sugared-almond pink to soft candy pink, sometimes lightly tinged with pale salmon, with a cream to pale yellow throat. The flowering is lightly fragrant. For flower arrangements, cut the stems when a few flowers are open; the others then open in the vase.

In the garden, double snapdragon Madame Butterfly F1 Pink adds height and charm to romantic borders. Plant it in dense clumps to form pastel columns, pairing it with double cosmos such as 'Double Click Rose Bonbon', or light umbellifers like Ammi majus 'Green Mist'. Its pastel pink tones pair perfectly with climbing sweet peas Spring Sunshine On The Beach pastel mix grown on a nearby support. In a large container on the patio, pair it with annual grasses and a few dwarf dahlias 'Melody Harmony'.

The snapdragon owes its common nickname of 'lion's mouth' to the particular shape of its flowers which, when pinched, take on the appearance of small open mouths.

Please note, these seeds are for experienced gardeners accustomed to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow snapdragon Madame Butterfly F1 Pink from January to March on the surface of well-drained seed compost. Do not cover the seeds. Place in a propagator or a tray inside a plastic bag, maintaining a temperature of 20-25°C until germination, which usually takes 10 to 21 days. Light aids germination.
Prick out the young plants when they are large enough to handle into trays or 8cm pots. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting them out in the open ground, after all risk of frost has passed, spacing each plant 23 to 30cm apart.

Snapdragons thrive in fertile, well-drained, well-worked soil in full sun. The common snapdragon is not very hardy (-6/-7°C) and is therefore often grown as an annual or biennial plant. However, it is not uncommon to see snapdragons survive several mild winters; they then become more susceptible to rust... To try to preserve a fine variety, protect the plants from severe frosts in winter by ensuring good soil drainage and covering the crowns with a thick carpet of leaves or dry herbaceous material; they will regrow in spring and flower earlier as a result.
