Description
Begonia Chanson F1 Salmon is a tuberous, trailing begonia, perfect for balconies and terraces in partial shade. Its large double salmon-coloured flowers, slightly apricot-tinged, form generous clusters that almost cover the foliage. This F1 hybrid from the Chanson series produces very uniform, vigorous plants with a long, regular flowering period, from summer until the first frosts. In hanging baskets, window boxes or large pots, it creates soft cascades of flowers, easy to pair with other half-shade annuals.
Coated seeds are surrounded by a fine layer of neutral material, based on mineral or organic powder. This coating makes them larger and more uniform, and therefore much easier to handle, measure out and distribute in the potting compost.
Botanically, Begonia Chanson F1 Salmon belongs to the Begonia × tuberhybrida group, in the Begoniaceae family. It is classified among the hybrid tuberous begonias. In our climates, it behaves as a non-hardy perennial: the aerial part dies back each winter, while the tuber remains dormant, protected from frost. It is often grown as an annual.
The Chanson F1 series comprises pendula multiflora tuberous begonias with large double or semi-double flowers, a trailing habit and particularly abundant flowering. It was developed by the Czech breeder Jan Černý, of the Cerny Jaroměř company, specialists in tuberous begonias.
The Salmon form displays a warm salmon hue, leaning towards peach. From the flattened tuber, 5 to 8 fleshy stems form, rising to 20–30cm before arching over and trailing down in a cascade of 30 to 45cm. In a pot, the plant forms a rounded mass 40–50cm in diameter. The leaves are asymmetrical, oval to heart-shaped, 5 to 10cm long, medium to dark green and glossy, with finely toothed margins and well-defined veins. The flowers are borne on long stalks in the leaf axils. They are camellia-flowered, double, 6 to 8cm wide, with numerous soft, slightly wavy tepals. As with other tuberous begonias, the larger male flowers are the most decorative. The flowering period extends from June to October.
Trailing Begonia Chanson F1 Salmon is an excellent variety for hanging baskets and containers on terraces and balconies. It should be placed in partial shade or light shade. It pairs well with the trailing fuchsia 'Swingtime' with its red and white flowers. To emphasise the cascading effect, it can be paired with a Lobelia 'Regatta Deep Blue'. In a large bowl, combine it with another trailing begonia such as 'Apricot Shades Improved' and complete the scene with a Heuchera 'Caramel' with its amber foliage.

Planting and care
Sow your trailing Begonia Chanson F1 Salmon seeds from January to March in a seed tray. Use good quality potting compost, sieved over the surface to ensure good contact between the seed and its substrate. Before sowing, firm the compost lightly with a presser board and moisten it slightly. Sow your seeds carefully. Do not cover the seeds. Water with a very fine spray or a small hand mister. Place your seed tray in a light position, out of direct sunlight, at a temperature of 24°C to 27°C.
Germination will take 15 to 60 days. As soon as the young plants are manageable, transplant them into 7cm pots. Keep the compost moist, but not waterlogged. Then, 15 days before planting out in their final position, begin to acclimatise them gradually to a temperature of 15°C.
At the end of May or the beginning of June, the temperature will be warm enough to plant out your young plants. Choose a shaded spot. Add a good trowel-full of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 20cm apart.
In autumn, bring the pots indoors under cover and allow the foliage to dry off before lifting the tubers from the soil, brushing them clean and storing them in a dry place until the following spring, when they can be replanted in pots.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
