Description
Cockscomb (Celosia argentea var. cristata, "cockscomb") ‘Captain Mix’ produces inflorescences shaped like velvety combs in warm hues. This selection is perfect for adding a touch of exoticism to a summer border and fresh or dried cut flower arrangements. From the Captain series, it stands out for its tall habit, sturdy stems, and generous flowering that extends from midsummer to the first frosts.
Celosia belongs to the Amaranthaceae family. Celosia argentea var. cristata has synonyms: Celosia cristata, C. argentea f. cristata. The wild species C. argentea is thought to originate from tropical Africa and has become widely naturalised in warm regions of Asia and America; the crested form, fixed by ancient horticultural selection, is cultivated near homes and temples in Asia. Grown as an annual in temperate climates, it behaves as a short-lived perennial in tropical to subtropical climates.
The Captain series, a professional series from the Dutch company Evanthia, has been selected for cut flowers: the young plants are vigorous, with very straight stems, they produce large, uniform heads and offer a stable colour mix. In open ground, they reach 80 cm to 1.10 m in height for 30 to 50 cm in spread; under cover, up to 1.20 m; in pots, between 30 and 60 cm depending on the volume of the container and the richness of the substrate. Their growth is fast, taking 10 to 14 weeks from sowing to flowering.
The leaves are lanceolate to ovate, medium green to bronze green depending on the strain; the stems are sometimes tinged with red. The inflorescences are flattened and scalloped, forming thick velvety combs 7 to 30 cm wide. The colour palette includes lemon yellow, golden yellow, apricot and orange, pink to fuchsia, cherry red and carmine. Flowering occurs from July to September-October.
Beyond its ornamental interest, Celosia argentea is eaten as a leaf vegetable in West Africa (this plant is called "Lagos spinach"). The crested form is traditionally used for decoration and certain rites in India and China; the inflorescences dry very well.
'Captain Mix’ will add texture and colour to summer borders. You can plant this celosia in groups of 5 to 7 at the back or middle of your display, in rich soil and full sun. Pair it, for example, with Gomphrena globosa ‘Purple’ with its long-lasting small flower balls, Zinnia 'Queen Pure Orange', French marigold 'Durango Yellow', and add a colourful grass like Pennisetum x advena ‘Rubrum’. In a large container, plant 3 young plants of Celosia with a coleus 'Palisandra' with almost black velvety foliage and a verbena 'Endurascape Purple Imp' with a trailing habit. For cut flower arrangements, cut when the base of the inflorescence is firm; to dry, hang the stems upside down in a dry, airy place.

Planting and care
Sow Celosia 'Captain Mix' from February to April in a seed tray, in a warm place. Use a good quality potting compost. Sow your seeds broadcast. Cover the seeds by sprinkling compost or vermiculite on top, press down lightly and water generously with a fine spray. Place your seed tray in the light, out of direct sunlight, at a temperature of 24° to 27° C.
Germination will take 14 to 21 days. As soon as the young plants have reached a height of 5 cm, transplant them into pots. 15 days before their final planting out, begin to harden them off gradually down to a temperature of 15° C.
At the end of May or the beginning of June, the temperature will be warm enough in the garden to plant out your young plants. Choose a very sunny position. Add a good amount of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 25 cm apart.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
