Description

The Cléome Helen Campbell is an annual plant with large growth (1m (3.3 ft) to 1.50m) forming clusters of white flowers that are very fragrant and have long stamens, giving them a unique appearance, from June until the first frost.

Known by the following Latin names: Cleome hassleriana, Cleome pungens, or Cleome spinosa, the Cléome Helen Campbell develops tall and hairy stems, carrying palmate leaves measuring 10 to 12 cm (4.7 in).

In summer, compact clusters of white flowers form at the end of the stems. The long stamens give an airy appearance to the flowers, which some compare to spider legs. For this reason, Cléome is called the "Spider Flower" in England.

The highly fragrant flowers fill the garden with their scent all summer long. Pollinating insects will be attracted to your garden because of their presence. It is a good way to improve the ecosystem of your garden and vegetable patch.

Cléome is ideal for creating impressive flowerbed compositions near the house or terrace to enjoy their delightful fragrance.

Originally from the warm regions of South America, Cleome hassleriana Helen Campbell thrives in full sun and cannot tolerate temperatures below 4°C.

Planting and care

Sow the Cleome in March-April in a seed tray. Use good quality compost. Scatter your seeds. Cover the seeds by sprinkling compost on top or vermiculite, lightly press down and water generously with a fine rain. Place your pots in light, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 25°C to 27°C. Lower the temperature at night to 17°C to create a beneficial germination alternation.

The seeds will take 1 month to germinate. As soon as the plants reach a height of 10 cm (3.9 in), transplant them into pots. 15 days before their final placement, start gradually acclimatizing them to a temperature of 15°C.

By the end of May or early June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location. Add a good handful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 25 to 30cm (11.8 in) apart.
