Description

Delphinium consolida 'Qis White' is part of a series of selected larkspur plants known for their beautiful stature and opulent flowering, in the form of tall spikes packed with beautiful double flowers. 'White' quickly forms a large, well-branched plant that produces, in the year of sowing, tall white flowers that will stand out at the back of borders, creating a sumptuous backdrop for perennial plants. The annual field of wheat larkspur is easy to grow, even in limestone soil, and can be sown directly in the ground, in borders or beds, in rich and moist soil, in full sun.

Delphinium 'Qis White' is one of the many hybrids obtained by cross-breeding Delphinium consolida, an annual plant with preferred winter germination that grows in cereal crops, on clay-limestone soil, and rather dry compared to most larkspur plants. It is a hardy, fast-growing annual plant that forms a broad tuft of 35 to 40cm (14 to 16in), with finely divided palmate foliage, tender green in colour, from which emerge in summer flowering stems of 1.20m (4ft) in height. Flowering takes place from June to September and is highly visited by pollinating insects. The double flowers, with spurs, are slightly ruffled cups, gathered on tall, densely packed spikes. Flowering is followed by the formation of numerous seeds that will easily germinate in the garden. The plant develops from a woody rhizome that extends vertically into the soil.

The characteristic silhouette of Delphiniums always brings volume, verticality, and a lot of charm to perennial plant beds. The 'Quis White' selection allows for the quick creation of a dramatic, yet elegant setting, by sowing directly in the ground. Delphiniums are also good companions for moss or gallica roses, creating charming and romantic compositions. You can also create another beautiful combination in a white garden with paniculate baby's breath, Crambe cordifolia, or Gillenia trifoliata. This variety is well suited for creating bouquets, as its flowers are particularly long-lasting in a vase and can even be dried. To do this, cut open flowers into small bouquets, hang the stems upside down, and store them in a dry and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds of Delphinium 'Qis White' directly outdoors, from April to May, in full sun, in a fertile, light, well-drained soil that has been well-prepared beforehand.

Bury the fine seeds to a depth of 6mm (0in) in small holes spaced 30cm (12in) apart. Keep the soil moist by regularly watering, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 14 to 21 days. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out by planting only one seedling every 15cm (6in).

For earlier flowering, sow Delphinium seeds from August to October in 7.5cm (3in) pots filled with good quality compost kept moist. Place the pots in a mini-greenhouse or inside a plastic bag at a temperature of 15-20°C (59-68°F) until germination. Once the seedlings have developed, place them in a bright, but cooler location. Overwinter the plants in a cool, bright place, protected from frost, by watering them sparingly. Transplant them to their final location in the following spring.

Water regularly until the plants are fully established. Insert sturdy stakes among the tall plants, about 10cm (4in) deep, which will allow them to grow upright while being supported. You can also stake the plants with bamboo canes. Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage the renewal of flowering. Delphiniums thrive in sunny locations protected from the wind, as well as in fertile soil rich in organic matter and well-drained.
