Description
Delphinium Pacific Giants 'Galahad' is a tall perennial larkspur for lovers of opulent borders and cut flowers. Its majestic spikes of pure white form veritable candles above a well-furnished clump of leaves. From the famous Pacific Giants series, it offers dense, regular flower stems, highly prized for flower arrangements. Sown in fertile, moist soil, in full sun, it quickly rewards the gardener with generous flowering, often followed by a repeat bloom in late summer.
Delphinium 'Galahad' belongs to the Ranunculaceae family and behaves as a short-lived herbaceous perennial. The plant forms a compact clump from a system of thick roots, sensitive to excess water and waterlogged soils. The deciduous rosette of foliage appears in spring. It consists of large, medium green, palmately lobed leaves, deeply cut into triangular lobes. From the crown, erect, hollow but robust stems rise, reaching 1.50 to 1.80m in height, which are best staked as soon as growth begins.
The inflorescences are long, dense spikes, carried well above the foliage. The numerous semi-double to double flowers measure 5 to 7cm in diameter. The petals pile up into full corollas, of a very luminous white, enhanced by a small central "eye" slightly greenish or cream, sometimes darker depending on the seed lines. Flowering occurs from June to July, with a possible repeat bloom in late summer, if the stems are cut back just after the first wave of flowers. Pollination is by insects, notably bees and bumblebees, attracted by the nectar contained in the floral spur.
The whole plant is toxic if ingested; it is best handled with gloves, especially during pruning and staking.
A bit of history: the Pacific Giants series is one of the most famous delphinium lines of the 20th century: developed in California by Frank Reinelt, then distributed and improved by the Benary seed house, it popularised these tall larkspurs named after characters from the Round Table – 'Galahad', 'King Arthur', 'Guinevere', 'Percival'… 'Galahad' has also received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society, a guarantee of real ornamental value and good reliability in cultivation.
In the garden, place Delphinium Pacific Giants 'Galahad' at the back of the border. It can be planted in groups of three or five to form a column of light behind lower perennials. It is an ideal companion for English roses in cream or pale pink tones such as 'Desdemona'. In a cottage garden, combine it with Foxglove 'Dalmatian Purple', the carmine red spikes of Lupin 'Mon Château' ('My Castle') and the mauve clouds of Phlox paniculata 'Blue Paradise'. Together, they create very floriferous borders from early summer until the end of the season and provide an abundance of blooms for flower arrangements.

Planting and care
Sow Delphinium Pacific Giants Galahad seeds from February to June in good quality, well-drained soil, and cover the seeds lightly with compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 10-13°C, or seal a clear polythene bag and place it in a dark spot until germination, which takes 1 to 3 months. Keep the compost moist but not wet.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out into 8cm pots and move the Delphinium young plants to cooler conditions. Once all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise the young plants to outdoor conditions for 7 to 10 days before planting outside in the open ground. Plant the Delphiniums at a distance of 45cm in moist, fertile, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Delphiniums dislike stagnant moisture. Choose a sunny position, sheltered from strong winds. Protect young delphiniums from attacks by slugs and snails.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
