Description

Dianthus amurensis 'Siberian Blues' is a robust, hardy perennial that forms neat bluish-green mounds covered with masses of lavender blue blooms all summer long. Charming and easy-going, it looks stunning in the foreground of blue and purple themed flowerbeds. This sun-loving plant is tolerant of drought and limestone.

Dianthus amurensis 'Siberian Blues' is a small perennial that belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family. It is native to the valleys along the Amur River in eastern Siberia. Fast-growing and cold-hardy, one plant is enough to cover half a square meter of ground. It forms dense mounds, measuring about of 40 cm in all directions. The light green, tiny, opposite, linear leaves are evergreen. This first-year flowering plant displays simple, lavender flowers with a speckled brown eye from July through till late Autumn.

This prolific bloomer is ideal for rock gardens or patios, and can be very useful for underplanting roses and other summer flowering shrubs. From July to September, its delightful lavender blooms combine well with Phlox 'Amethyst' and Sedum 'Karfunkelstein'. Like most Dianthus species, it is drought tolerant. In dry soil, it can be grown alongside Cerastostigma plumbaginoides, Aster ericoides, A. turbinellus, Salvia x jamensis or S. microphylla etc.

Planting and care

Sow from February to June (or September-October) on the surface of light, moist sowing mix and cover with a fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or polythene bag and keep in a light room at a temperature of 15-20°C until germination (generally 14 to 30 days). Make sure the soil stays moist but not waterlogged. When the seedlings are strong enough to handle, transplant them into pots. When all risk of frost is over, plant them out in a sunny location, in poor to ordinary soil. Make sure to leave about 30 cm between each plant.

Alternatively, direct sow in spring when frosts are no longer to be feared. Scatter the seeds in loose, well prepared soil, cover slightly and keep moist.
