Description

The Florist's Carnation 'Marie Chabaud' is an old French variety of Dianthus caryophyllus. Its large double flowers with a typical clove scent are canary yellow. They bloom in summer at the top of 50 cm stems to create elegant bouquets. Ideal for flower beds and borders, these plants tolerate water shortage and limestone, but bloom more with regular watering.

The Chabaud Carnation 'Marie' belongs to the caryophyllaceae family. The species, Dianthus caryophyllus, is a Mediterranean plant that has passed down to its descendants, among other traits, its wonderful, recognisable clove fragrance. 'Marie Chabaud' carnations grow quite rapidly, standing out for their vigour and floriferousness. Their adult size will reach around 50 to 60 cm in height with an equivalent spread. These carnations form dense clumps, from which emerge, from June to July and even until September if the soil remains moist, very fragrant flowers at the top of long and sturdy stems, generally single-flowered. The linear, smooth, leathery leaves are of a superb bluish-grey. They persist through winter.

Dianthus 'Marie Chabaud' is an ideal plant for sunny flower beds, combining robustness, simplicity, and elegance. Near the house, it diffuses its enchanting fragrance, also lovely in bouquets thanks to its intense scent. In the garden, it pairs well with other plants forming flowering cushions like rock roses, campions, bellflowers, Erigeron karvinskianus, and Bloody Cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum). Catmints, columbines, and Pincushion Flowers are also interesting options. You can add some grasses to diversify the texture. These plants adapt perfectly to pot cultivation with good drainage, regular watering, and some fertiliser.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds of Carnation Marie Chabaud from February to April under cover.

Sow in seed trays, containers, or pots filled with well-drained seed compost. The seeds should be barely covered with compost. Place the seedlings in a propagator, a greenhouse, or a warm room to maintain an optimal temperature of 18 to 20°C. Germination usually takes 14 to 30 days.

Pot on the young plants when they are large enough to handle, into individual 8 cm diameter pots. Gradually acclimatise the young plants to outdoor conditions. Plant with a spacing of 30 cm between each plant.

You can also sow directly outdoors from April to June in warmed soil.

Cultivation:

Plant Carnations in ordinary, permeable and humus-bearing, rocky, rather calcareous, well-drained soil. A rich and light soil yields good results. In open ground, this plant is quite hardy, withstanding temperatures down to -15°C. It prefers a very sunny exposure. Lightly trim back the clump after summer flowering to encourage a second flush in September. In rich soil, trim back some of the foliage with shears after flowering to maintain a dense habit. In poor soil, it's useful to apply a balanced fertiliser in March. Divide clumps every 3 years to rejuvenate those with bare bases or easily propagate by layering or cuttings.
