Description
The seeds of Dianthus deltoides 'Albus', also known as maiden pink, develop into a spreading and evergreen perennial forming a small dense and very floriferous cushion. Its pure white flowers with delicately fringed petals exhale a pleasant fragrance, while its foliage, made up of tiny leaves, brings a fine and elegant texture. This robust, drought-resistant plant combines strength, simplicity, and floriferousness. Perfect for rockeries, walls, or borders, it thrives ideally in full sun.
Dianthus deltoides 'Albus' belongs to the family of Caryophyllaceae. It is also called heathland bush. It is a cultivar derived from Dianthus deltoides, a species native to Europe and temperate Asia, where it grows in dry areas, heathlands or hills, woodland edges, on poor grasslands. The growth of this bush is very rapid. Its mature size will not exceed 15 cm in height, in flower, with a spread of 30 cm and more. It forms a small prostrate tuft with a spreading habit. Its tiny, linear, medium green leaves, sometimes tinged with purple, are flexible and tight on thin stems. Flowering begins in May-June and continues until September-October if the soil is not too dry. The plant is continuously covered with small flowers with fringed petals. They are slightly scented.
The deltoid pink particularly enjoys an open location, on a sunny slope, where it can spread freely. Ideal for rockeries, well-drained slopes, or the tops of dry stone walls, it brings floriferousness and delicacy. This perennial is also perfect for decorating the base of shrubs in pots, enhancing large containers, or beautifying alpine troughs. Before planting, in heavy or clayey soils, incorporate gravel and coarse sand to improve drainage and prevent excess moisture. The white maiden pink 'Albus' pairs beautifully with alpine plants such as alyssums, soapworts, creeping phlox (Phlox subulata and Phlox douglasii), aubrietas, candytufts, and rock roses, thus creating harmonious and resilient compositions.
The generic name comes from the Greek 'dios' for 'Jupiter or divine' and 'anthos' for 'flower'. These dianthuses, or 'divine flowers', were named as such by Theophrastus, due to their sweet fragrance and beauty. Deltoides refers to 'delta', the Greek letter, in relation to the shape of the petals.

Planting and care
Sow Dianthus deltoides 'Albus' from February to April.
Sow on the surface of light and moist potting soil in pots or trays and cover with a fine sprinkle of potting soil or vermiculite. Keep at a temperature between 18-20°C. After sowing, keep in the light as this promotes germination. Keep the surface of the soil moist, but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 14-30 days.
Pot on the plants large enough to handle into 8cm pots or trays. Acclimatise them gradually to a cooler environment for a few weeks before transplanting once all risk of frost has passed. Space the plants 30cm apart.
Cultivation:
Plant the Delta Pink in ordinary, well-drained, humus-bearing, rocky or limestone soil, moist to dry and above all well-drained. A gravel-rich soil yields good results. This plant prefers a very sunny exposure. Only water in case of prolonged drought. Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage flowering and prolong its lifespan. However, in stony soil, this pink self-seeds abundantly if care is taken to let some seeds ripen. Lightly trim the clump after flowering to help it regrow. In poor soil, it is useful to apply a balanced fertiliser in March. This pink does not appreciate the competition of invasive plants, which, if placed nearby, can cause it to disappear by imposing too much shade.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
