Description

Pelargonium Horizon 'Shadow Mix F1' is an annual zonal geranium from the Horizon series, which offers dense, compact, uniform plants with short, sturdy stems that bear brightly coloured flowers, with early and long-lasting flowering. 'Shadow Mix' stands out with its very dark, chocolate-coloured foliage, surrounded by a small apple-green margin. The rounded clusters of flowers are in different shades of pink, salmon, and bright red. This resilient variety blooms from early summer if sown from January to mid-March. Ideal for small gardens, hanging baskets, and containers.

Zonal pelargoniums are perennial hybrids from the geranium family, in a large group called Pelargonium x hortorum. They are mostly derived from Pelargonium inquinans, native to the southeastern tip of Africa, with contributions from Pelargonium zonale and Pelargonium frutetorum. The Horizon 'Shadow Mix F1' geranium forms a bushy clump with a fairly compact habit, and a relatively modest growth, at least 30 cm in all directions. It flowers from spring to autumn, displaying medium-sized flowers in shades of pink to red, with wide petals. They stand out well against the very dark foliage. Its sturdy and succulent stems bear circular, wavy leaves with toothed margins and a thick, healthy texture.

Ever more vigorous and floriferous pelargoniums outdo themselves from one series to another. It is a generous and undemanding plant, perfect to decorate pots for a large part of the year. But beyond balconies and terraces, also plant them in sunny flower beds and borders. Plant them in mass plantings, to create a lasting and cheerful display throughout summer. These plants tolerate drought quite well, allowing them to be combined with resilient annuals such as garden verbenas, cosmos, and zinnias. In pots or hanging baskets, mix different varieties of geraniums chosen for their varied colours, or add periwinkles, violets, Carex, or silver-leaved plants such as artemisias or senecios.

Planting and care

Sow the pelargonium seeds outdoors, in place, in April-May, after the frosts. Choose a sunny location on well-drained, prepared and properly loosened soil. Sow the seeds finely, at a depth of 3mm, with a spacing of 30 cm. Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes about twenty days. When the plants are large enough to handle, transplant them 15 cm apart from each other.

Another alternative is to sow indoors from August to September to obtain flowering in early summer the following year. Sow the seeds on the surface of good quality compost at a temperature of 18-20°C, and cover with a pinch of very fine compost or vermiculite. Keep the sowing in light as it facilitates germination. When the seedlings are large enough to be moved, transplant and grow them protected from the cold until the young plants are large enough to be moved outdoors. You can keep these plants in a frost-free area, before planting them in the ground in the following spring, or in pots. Garden geraniums thrive in fertile, well-drained, properly loosened soil, in full sun.
