Description

The 'Loveliness' pink Lavatera trimestris is a lovely variety of annual mallow, also known as three-month mallow, appreciated for its generosity and vibrant pink flowering. This vigorous annual plant tirelessly produces flowers that somewhat resemble Hibiscus blooms. The large satin corollas radiate under the sun, from summer to autumn. A flagship plant of old-fashioned gardens, the annual mallow forms beautiful flowering bushes in just one season, easy to integrate into borders and large beds of perennials, annuals, or bushes.

Seeds from Organic Agriculture.

The 'Loveliness' Lavatera trimestris is an old horticultural variety. The type species, Lavatera trimestris, is a slightly hardy annual mallow native to the Mediterranean region. It is a cousin of wood mallows (Malva sylvestris) or marshmallow (Althea officinalis), belonging to the same family of Malvaceae. The 'Loveliness' variety forms a beautiful, branched bush measuring 1m (3ft) in height and 50cm (20in) in width in just a few weeks. The foliage of this variety is dark green, slightly greyish. The basal leaves are almost round, while those that cover the stems have palmate lobes, resembling maple leaves. Flowering occurs from June-July to October (earlier in warm climates), and it continues uninterrupted until the first frosts. The flowers are a rich pink, satin-like, veined with a deep pink on a candy pink background, of a good size (7cm (3in) in diameter), solitary at the axils of the leaves. They are not long-lasting, but they continually renew on the plant, especially when faded flowers are regularly removed. The large seeds contained in their black, ripe capsules are easy to sow.

Annual mallows are essential in "cottage" gardens, and varieties with bright colours easily find their place in "mixed borders" and beds of annuals. They can be paired with love-in-a-mist, cosmos, blue cornflowers, or pretty perennials like flax, summer asters, or Gauras. A single packet of 'Loveliness' Lavatera trimestris seeds can decorate multiple beds. Its flowering clumps will look beautiful with small bushes like roses, shrub mallows, Perovskia, and Caryopteris, for example.

Planting and care

Annual lavateras are sown in spring, directly in open ground, when temperatures warm up (germination occurs at 15 °C (59°F)). Light promotes seed germination. You can also sow in March, early in the season, under shelter, to transplant the plants in place from May, when the last frosts have passed. When the young plants are about 20cm (8in) tall, you can pinch the main stems to force them to branch out. Leave at least 40-50cm (16-20in) between each plant.

For their cultivation, choose a well-exposed location, in the sun, as well as an ordinary, slightly alkaline soil, but well-drained. A too rich soil will favour the growth of leaves at the expense of flowering.

For a beautiful flowering, the soil must remain fresh, even moist, but without stagnant water; so don't hesitate to mulch the plants and water from time to time, especially in hot and dry weather.
