Lavatera trimestris 'Loveliness Pink'

The 'Loveliness' pink Lavatera trimestris is a lovely variety of annual mallow, also known as three-month mallow, appreciated for its generosity and vibrant pink flowering. The 'Loveliness' Lavatera trimestris is an old horticultural variety. The type species, Lavatera trimestris, is a slightly hardy annual mallow native to the Mediterranean region. It is a cousin of wood mallows (Malva sylvestris) or marshmallow (Althea officinalis), belonging to the same family of Malvaceae. The 'Loveliness' variety forms a beautiful, branched bush measuring 1m (3ft) in height and 50cm (20in) in width in just a few weeks. The foliage of this variety is dark green, slightly greyish. The basal leaves are almost round, while those that cover the stems have palmate lobes, resembling maple leaves. Flowering occurs from June-July to October (earlier in warm climates), and it continues uninterrupted until the first frosts. The flowers are a rich pink, satin-like, veined with a deep pink on a candy pink background, of a good size (7cm (3in) in diameter), solitary at the axils of the leaves. They are not long-lasting, but they continually renew on the plant, especially when faded flowers are regularly removed. The large seeds contained in their black, ripe capsules are easy to sow.
