Description
Silene colorata Pink Pirouette bears a multitude of ravishing flowers that look like tiny propellers in a lovely shade of a slightly mauve pink, throughout the whole summer. With its compact, almost trailing habit, this small annual plant is ideal for borders, rock gardens, planters and hanging baskets. It can be sown in spring or at the end of summer in mild climates. Give it full sun and well-drained soil.
Silene colorata is an annual herbaceous plant native to Mediterranean coasts, where it grows spontaneously among rocks and in sandy soils. This plant of the family Caryophyllaceae, is also a cousin of carnations. It presents fast growth and good hardiness which allows it to be sown early in spring, or even in autumn in milder climates. The variety 'Pink Pirouette' has been selected for its compact habit that forms a sort of spreading cushion. The plant produces a basal clump of small, elliptical to lanceolate, linear, 1 to 3 cm long, fairly light green, velvety leaves, from which 15 cm tall, mostly leafless stems rise. Flowering takes place in summer, lasting many weeks from June to September. Each stem produces flowers measuring 1-2 cm in diameter, made up of 5 spatulate petals rolled up at their tips. The corolla is mauve-pink in colour and is surrounded at their base by a swollen calyx, lined with very noticeable purple veins. The blooms are followed by the formation of numerous fine seeds that germinate easily in light soil.
Catchfly or Campion are perhaps the prettiest of annuals, because of their incredibly light, airy silhouette and their small brilliant flowers. They enchant flowerbeds and rock gardens, where they form patches of colour that are as bright as they are poetic. 'Pink Pirouette' brings the charm of flowering meadows and of the sunny Mediterranean coast to our gardens. Sow in slightly wild looking beds, along garden paths, in the rock garden. It looks great accompanied by ornamental grasses such as Stipa tenuifolia or Mulhenbergia capillaris. Accustomed to dry soils, Silene Pink Pirouette is a perfect partner for catnips, pink, blue or white love-in-a-mist, pastel-coloured California poppies, dark purple knapweed, ornamental carrots, perennial flax and many others... It is also an excellent plant for hanging baskets and window boxes.

Planting and care
Sow catchfly Pink Pirouette seeds outside, in their final positions, in March-April. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained, well-cultivated soil that has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow the seeds thinly at a depth of 1 mm, spacing them 30 cm apart. Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 14-21 days. When the campion plants are large enough to be handled, transplant them 15 cm apart.
Another alternative is to sow indoors in a cool climate or directly in their final positions in a mild climate, from August to September, for an early flowering in spring the following year.
Sow campion on the surface of a good quality compost, at a temperature of 18-23 °C, and cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Keep the seedlings in the light as this helps germination. When the seedlings are large enough to be moved, prick them out and grow them in a cool place until the seedlings are large enough to be planted out. Grow these plants in a frost-free room before planting out in open ground the following spring, or planting in pots.
Campions require full sun and soils that are not too dry, fertile, light and well loosened in order to bloom well.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
