Description

The Lathyrus cloranthus Lemonade or Yellow Sweet Pea is an annual climbing plant with a small habit (80 to 100 cm (32 to 39in)) that stands out for its sulphur-yellow flowering. Its papilionaceous flowers, which are 1 to 3 cm (0 to 1in) long and less abundant than those of the classic sweet pea, appear in pairs and compensate for this small quantity with this extremely rare colour. The tendrils that develop along the stems attach themselves to the support you provide.

Native to Eastern Turkey, it thrives in warm and sunny locations with well-drained or even rocky soil.

The large seeds of Lathyrus cloranthus 'Lemonade' are easy to sow and require little cultivation. This sweet pea is perfect for adding flowers to a fence or a pot on the terrace throughout the summer.

Planting and care

Sow in March-April, 3 sweet pea seeds per pot at a depth of 1cm (0in). Use a seed compost and small pots of approximately 7cm (3in) in height. Water moderately and place your pots at a temperature of around 20°C (68°F) until germination, which will take between 10 and 20 days. When the seedlings have reached the stage of the second pair of leaves, cut the tip of each stem to encourage branching. Place your pots in a cooler place (10-15°C (50-59°F)) until planting, which will take place after the last risk of frost. In May, plant your young sweet peas every 30cm (12in), at the base of a support on which they can climb (trellis, wire mesh). Regular but not excessive watering will accelerate their growth. A sunny location will promote abundant flowering from June to August. Please review the translation for any potential mistakes.
