Viola odorata seeds - Sweet violet

Viola odorata, or Sweet Violet, is a small perennial well known for its small fragrant flowers, most often violet or mauve, less commonly white or pink. Appreciated for its delicate scent, it easily finds its place in shady or semi-shady areas, even dry in summer. Used as a border or ground cover, it brings a welcome touch of colour to the garden from late winter. Wood Violet is also renowned for its culinary and medicinal uses, especially in syrups and herbal teas.

Sweet Violet belongs to the Violaceae family. It is a botanical species native to all of Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It naturally grows in woodlands, at the base of shady hedges, or on chalky slopes. It is a perennial plant that spreads through its stolons, thus forming a dense carpet that becomes increasingly wider over the years. Its vegetation does not exceed 20 cm in height. Its leaves are heart-shaped, slightly fuzzy and dark green. They are usually deciduous in winter but can persist in mild climates. The flowers, measuring between 13 and 17 mm, appear in late winter and early spring, between March and May depending on the climate. They emit a sweet, floral scent to be enjoyed up close. They mainly come in violet, but can also be white or pink in plants from seedlings. Flowering is followed by the formation of small capsules containing seeds that self-sow in the garden. This plant can withstand frost down to at least -15°C and tolerates dry soils in summer. In very dry summers, its foliage may dry out.

Sweet Violet is ideal as a border, in shaded beds, or as ground cover under deciduous trees and bushes. It pairs particularly well with other woodland plants. You can associate it with Hellebores, such as the Corsican Hellebore or Helleborus sternii 'Flame', or with Ferns, especially Dryopteris filix-mas. Other interesting companions include Heucheras for their textured foliage and Wood Anemones (Anemone nemorosa), which offer complementary early-season flowering. Together, these plants create a harmonious plant display in slightly shaded areas of the garden.
