Description
The Armeria pseudarmeria Ballerina Mixed, also known as Spanish grass in Ballerina Mixed blend or Maritime Armeria Ballerina Mixed, is a small evergreen perennial plant with a blue-green cushion habit that adorns itself from spring and for a long period of tight inflorescences of small red, pink, lilac or white flowers depending on the plants. It sometimes shows a perpetual flowering. Adapted to sandy coastal soils, it withstands wind, drought, and cold. Easy to grow, its only requirement is to be planted in well-drained soil in full sun.
The Spanish grass Ballerina Mixed belongs to the plumbaginaceae family. It is a selection of different cultivars derived from Armeria pseudarmeria, native to mountains and coasts of the northern hemisphere, including Europe (Western Portugal). This robust fast-growing perennial reaches a height of 25 cm (9.8 in) when in bloom, 10 cm (3.9 in) for the foliage, with a spread of 30 cm (11.8 in). Armeria pseudarmeria forms a compact and dense clump. The remarkably long flowering can occur as early as the first year after sowing. It begins in May-June and lasts until August. There is sometimes a late summer flowering. The flowers are grouped in dense rounded heads at the top of long rigid stems. They are bright red, bright pink, mauve, or white depending on the plants. The evergreen foliage is anchored on the ramified stump and has a very vibrant blue-green color. It resembles the fine foliage of grasses.
The Armeria maritima Ballerina Mixed is primarily a sun and coastal plant that will fully play its role as ground cover in rockeries or borders. It can be associated with other perennials that require similar growing conditions: carnations, classic but unbeatable in this use, as well as other small cushions such as woolly artemisia, heart-leaved globe daisy, creeping baby's breath, Helichrysum angustifolium, silver carpet (Cerastium tomentosum), or fleabane (Erigeron karvinskianus). It can also be planted in an alpine garden or in pots, containers, and flower boxes.

Planting and care
Before sowing, soak the seeds in water for 6 to 8 hours.
Sow the armeria seeds from late March to May, at 16-18°C, on the surface of good quality compost. Cover with a very light layer of compost or vermiculite and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Place the seed tray inside a transparent polyethylene bag in a mini-greenhouse until germination, which usually takes 14 to 21 days. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them in cooler conditions until they are sufficiently developed to be planted outdoors.
Move the plants outdoors and sink the pots into the ground up to their rims, in a sheltered outdoor site, grow them in cooler conditions before final planting in autumn, maintaining a distance of 30 cm (11.8 in) between each plant. Grow armerias in full sun on well-drained soil. These plants tolerate sandy and poor soils once established and are particularly suitable for coastal areas. In heavy soils, incorporate plenty of coarse sand or gravel to improve drainage before planting.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
