I received a repackaged packet in a plain packaging. I will have to take a screenshot to see what this young plant looks like. Furthermore, there is no expiry date. For £7.50, I would have expected better service. It's absolutely rubbish!!!

Description

Cirsium japonicum 'Pink and Rose Beauty' is a perennial plant native to Japan. However, horticulturists have improved the original Meadow Thistle to obtain these gorgeous flower colours of pale-pink and crimson.

The leaves form a medium to dark green clump of about 20cm (8in). They are oblong, dentate, and slightly spiny.

The flowers are tubular and have pale-pink and crimson colours. They are clustered in heads of 5cm (2in) in diameter and bloom from September to October. The flowering reaches a height of 150cm (59in) and a width of 60cm (24in).

This is a very hardy plant, which is easy to grow. It thrives in all types of soil, even poor and dry ones. It requires a very sunny spot to give its best. It can even become invasive as it spreads easily through its roots (trailing rhizomes) and spontaneous seedlings.

It is an excellent cut flower with a long vase life, ideal for late summer and autumn bouquets.

Planting and care

Sow from February to June in a tray. Use good quality compost. Scatter your seeds. Cover the seeds by sprinkling compost on top or use vermiculite, gently press down, and water generously with a fine spray. Place your tray in a well-lit area, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 15 to 20°C (59 to 68°F).

The germination of the seeds will take from 21 to 40 days. As soon as the plants reach a height of 5cm (2in), transplant them into pots. 15 days before their final placement, start gradually acclimatising them to the outdoor temperature.

By the end of May, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location. Space your plants 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) apart.

Early season sowings will flower in the first year. For others, you will have to wait until the following year to see the flowers.
