Description

The Gypsophila elegans 'Covent Garden', also known as Gypsophila elegans, is a variety of annual Gypsophila that bears a multitude of graceful small white flowers on long, slender, branching stems:  beautifully delicate, superb in the company of Cosmos and very chic in fresh or dried flower arrangements.

Belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family, it is an annual plant with a bushy habit that reaches a height of 45 cm (17.7 in) and a width of 35 cm (13.8 in).

The Elegans 'Covent Garden' variety distinguishes itself from the classic Gypsophila by the shape of its flowers: clustered in panicles, they are single and have lovely petals of white, tinged with a hint of mauve. Its foliage is composed of small lanceolate leaves of a greyish green. Together, they create a delicate and airy mist. In English, this plant is commonly called Baby's Breath.

It is a variety, flowering prolifically, to be enjoyed from late spring to early autumn.

Its presence is essential in white gardens, ideal for outdoor weddings, and very useful for adding an airy touch to a border. To create an atmosphere of lightness and finesse, combine it with delicate Cosmos or Thalictrums. It is also entirely possible to grow it in a pot.

Despite its fragile appearance, this Gypsophila is easy to grow. Plant it in a sunny spot, in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It is not demanding and even thrives in a chalky soil (in Latin, Gypsophila means "chalk-loving").

Once established, it requires little care and watering.

Planting and care

Sow directly in early spring in well-prepared soil, at a depth of 3 mm (0.1 in) in rows spaced 30cm (11.8 in) apart. Germination usually takes about 21 days. An autumn sowing can be done for earlier flowering. Similarly, you can sow in the autumn in pots that will be kept in a well-ventilated cold greenhouse.

When the plants are large enough to handle, thin to 30 cm (11.8 in).

Plant Gypsophila in full sun in deep, light, well-drained soil. Gypsophila prefers a somewhat chalky soil.
