Very pretty and easy. I sowed them a few years ago, and they are now a beautiful clump with delicate flowers like jewels. They can withstand extreme cold (-18 °C (-0.4°F)) and high temperatures (40 °C (104°F)) without any issues. Our soil here is chalky, rich, and heavy, which suits them perfectly.

Description

Knautia macedonica or Macedonian Scabious is a hardy, very graceful perennial that offers charming little purple-red flowers all summer long. Its bushy growth habit makes it particularly suitable for borders and beds.

Knautia macedonica is native to Eastern Europe and belongs to the Dipsaceae family. This fast-growing plant has a bushy growth habit (70 cm high and 40 cm wide), bearing globe-shaped flowers on erect, flexible stems that may need staking. It enjoys full sun to part shade as well as rich and well-drained soils, with a preference for limestone soils. It is easy to grow and self-seeds easily without becoming invasive, in the right conditions.

This delicate beauty is particularly suited to naturalistic gardens and is easily combined with other perennials such as loosestrife, Agastache or Liatris spicata. For a contemporary meadow effect, grow it en masse alongside ornamental grasses. Knautia is also a magnet to foraging insects such as bees and butterflies.

Planting and care

Sow from February to April on the surface of good quality sowing mix. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of potting mix or vermiculite. Place in a propagator, polythene bag, or near a radiator and keep at a temperature of 21 to 24°C. Keep the surface of the potting soil moist but not waterlogged until germination (10 to 30 days). When the young plants are strong enough to be handled, transplant them into individual pots or containers. Gradually harden them off and plant them out once all risk of frost is over. Space the plants 40 cm apart in fertile, well-drained soil.
